Why I Chose To Become a Blogger and Things I’ve Learned As A Blogger

By Saumya Shiohare @myriadmusings1

There are so many lucrative, higher-paying jobs that you could have gone for after your bachelors in Business Administration, but why BLOGGING- I get asked a lot of times and my answer is the same each time- it's not about money always! We have to make a choice between passion, persuasion and pressure to earn a living and I chose PASSION! Plus, my husband said- " don't do things cuz the whole world is doing it, do it only if it makes you happy!"

Thanks to my hardworking husband who takes care of the finances, so that I can focus on our number one priority- Riri! I still remember the day when Riri was born and hubs came to me and said- " I will take care of everything, you just focus on Riri, her health, her wellness, her upbringing, her life and her education." It was in that moment when I decided to shift my focus and for first five years of Riri's life I gave my heart and soul into being a mother- a GOOD ONE!

It was like life was testing me- testing me as a mom and as a wife, whose daughter was young and so was husband's business. In case you did not know hubs runs his own financial advisory firm and by God's grace things have been amazing so far! But it was not like that when he embarked on his journey as a new business owner in a new country- it was scary, tumultuous, uncertain and nerve racking. We were at a crossroad where we he either started his own firm or we left this country for good, and I am proud he took up the challenge.....

A new baby, a new business, income security- how could I not step up to share the responsibility with hubs. I took care of Riri, the house and everything that came along while he focused entirely on nurturing his business. We could have hired a babysitter and I could have taken up a 9 to 5 job, but that would have meant failing hub's whose only expectation from me was to take care of Riri. I'm glad I did cuz my daughter makes me proud each day, every day!

I am not going to deny all the madness, craziness and being-worthless thoughts that came along the way. I had my good days and bad, I would have occasional meltdowns, and random moments when I just wanted to shut myself in a room, but I'm glad it is all over. It was two years post all these hardships when I approached husband about starting my own blog and he did not even thick twice before saying YES!

Riri had started preschool by then and I could dedicate the few free hours in the morning towards blogging. Even hub's business situation was stable and he was able to pitch more help at home. It seemed ideal, I was able to blog and be a mother without any guilt of not giving time to my child. I had struck the right balance between being a part-time blogger and a full-time mom. Slowly Riri's hours at school increased and I was able to take up more partnership opportunities. My passion was turning into a business which was just so satisfactory. Things happen at the right time and when they are meant to happen- this life mantra was proving to be true in my case.

Some things I've learned as a blogger.
  • There are no shortcuts, you gotta take baby steps towards fame and success
  • It's not easy as it might look, there is constant pressure
  • It is exhausting
  • You are constantly being judged, scrutinized, so watch your words and your actions too
  • It is tempting and you can easily fall off the budget bandwagon
  • There is cut throat competition all around
  • It gives you major FOMO, so you need to set boundaries for yourself
  • Be true to who you are and brands will come to you for your authenticity
  • Be firm about your terms, you are running a business and you need to approach every offer as a business opportunity
  • It is OKAY to say NO
  • It is okay to BREATHE!
