There’s something oddly charming about wandering through an arts space without fully knowing what you’re about to stumble into.
Maybe it’s a half-open studio door. Maybe it’s hearing music echoing down a corridor. Or maybe it’s suddenly discovering that behind one quiet room is an artist painting, rehearsing, sculpting or building something entirely unexpected.
That’s probably why Goodman Arts Centre has always intrigued me.
Most people know it as an arts enclave, but unless you’ve actually spent time exploring the grounds, you probably wouldn’t realize just how many artists, performers, creators and creative communities quietly exist inside this space.
On 6 June, Goodman Arts Centre is opening things up a little more through its new GAC Artventure initiative, where visitors are invited to wander through Open Studios, explore self-guided themed trails, and step into the working spaces of artists across the center.
While there’s a huge lineup happening throughout the day, these were some of the activities that have caught my attention.
🎨 For The Creatives And Curious Minds
One of the activities that instantly stood out to me was the Introduction to Manga & Comic Character Drawing Workshop by ComXnaut Studio. The sessions are beginner-friendly and explore manga illustration basics like character anatomy, shapes and design, making it feel approachable even if you’ve never properly drawn before. Maybe this might just awaken my animation bug again?
Another one I’d probably stop by is the Studio SuperSegak Open Studio by Iefa Shamsir and Asno, where visitors can explore printmaking, woodblock printing, silkscreen demonstrations and even live graffiti sessions. I find there’s something very satisfying about seeing art being made live instead of only viewing finished works on walls.
And for those who enjoy getting hands-on with trendy creative hobbies, the Tufting Jam sessions by EBAO (DPLMT) honestly sound like one of the more unexpectedly fun stops of the day. Visitors get to experiment with textures and learn the basics of tufted artworks in a relaxed environment.
This sounds like an artsy weekend date energy eh?
🌿 The Unexpectedly Calming Experiences
Out of the entire lineup, one experience I’m especially curious about is Silent Nourishment by Neil Chua. The session combines harmonic resonance, sound healing, hands-on tutorials and a curated tea experience within the artist’s studio.
There’s also the Leafy Abstract Prints Workshop by Valerie Ng, where participants create layered abstract prints inspired by nature using leaves, rollers and mixed media techniques. I bet this one will get loads of family and kids excited.
🌱 The Surprise Highlight For Me
One thing I genuinely did not expect while reading through the lineup was discovering that Goodman Arts Centre actually has a community farm tucked within the grounds.
The Goodman Community Farm activities include guided farm tours, botanical beverage tastings, and a small kinship market featuring regenerative food products and produce grown within the community. I think this makes the entire event feel less like a conventional arts programme and more like wandering through a hidden creative village where art, nature and community quietly overlap, which will make the Artventure feel different.
🎭 For Families And Little Explorers
Families with children will probably find quite a few fun stops throughout the day too. The Artground’s Lost Islands installation sounds especially magical, bringing myths and legends from Singapore and Indonesia to life through interactive sensory experiences.
There’ll also be:
- caricature portraits
- face painting
- henna art
- butterfly painting
- puppetry experiences
- children dance showcases
- hands-on craft activities
spread across the center throughout the day. So, even casual visitors who aren’t deeply into the arts will probably still find something playful or interactive to enjoy.
🥾 Self-Guided Trails
Beyond the open studios themselves, GAC Artventure also introduces self-guided themed trails around Goodman Arts Centre.
The concepts sound pretty fun, which ones will you take on?
- The Curious Wanderer encourages visitors to freely roam and collect stamps along the way
- The Art Explorer focuses on discovering artworks and open studios across the grounds
- The Time Discoverer uncovers stories from Goodman’s past through “Postcards from the Past”
It feels almost game-like in a very relaxed and artsy way, rather than turning art into something intimidating or formal, this feels more like an open invitation to explore at your own pace, linger a little longer, and maybe stumble onto something unexpected behind a studio door.
