It’s official – at the end of 2024, we found out we were finally getting a live-action adaptation of Disney’s Tangled, which means the internet has been getting busy speculating which stars will be cast to play the lead roles.
BonusFinder have released a brand new list of the actors most likely to land the role of the three main characters; Rapunzel, Flynn Rider and Mother Gothel – including A-List superheroes, musical superstars and pop princesses.
Who will play Flynn Rider?
Flynn is by far one of the most popular Disney love interests – and also isn’t your classic Disney prince. His character was something that the animators took seriously, hosting what they now call the ‘The Hot Man Meeting’ where they invited a group of women to review hundreds of drawings of Flynn to help decide how he should look.
The favorite to play Flynn is Spider-Man himself, Andrew Garfield with odds at 4/5. The actor has an incredibly impressive filmography, but his break-out role was arguably playing Spiderman in 2012’s The Amazing Spider-Man, and its 2014 sequel.
He can also sing; which is usually a requirement for a Disney film – showcasing his vocal talent in 2021’s movie musical Tick, Tick…Boom!
Jonathan Bailey is the second favorite to play the role – the British actor became a heartthrob after his role in Bridgerton, but most recently starred in Wicked: Part 1 as love interest Fiyero. The film showed that he can sing, dance, act and flirt – ticking all the required boxes to play Flynn.
Other favourites include Zombies’ star Milo Manheim on 9/4, Stranger Things’ Steve and singer-songwriter, Joe Keery on 9/2, and finally, Aussie actor, Jacob Elordi on 10/1.
Who will play Rapunzel?
When the news that fans were finally getting an adaptation, pop princess Sabrina Carpenter was tipped to play Rapunzel – but she’s now been overtaken by Florence Pugh, with the British actress’s odds at 4/9.
Alongside many thinking she has a striking resemblance to the animated character, she has an impressive roster of films under her belt – from Oppenheimer to We Live In Time, the latter being a tearjerker romance alongside Flynn favourite, Andrew Garfield.
Sabrina is still a high favorite though, with her odds at 4/6. With much of her recent success coming from her musical career – many may not know she started as an actress, with big ties to Disney. Alongside her impressive vocals and stage presence, she also has experience on the Broadway stage, after playing a lead role in the musical adaptation of Mean Girls.
Also in the mix to play Rapunzel is American actress, Meg Donnelly at 9/5, Taylor Swift 9/1, and Amanda Seyfried at 16/1.
Who will play Mother Gothel?
When it comes to the casting of the film’s villain, Mother Gothel there’s only one name on everyone’s lips: Katheryn Hahn, with her odds at a staggering 2/9.
Hahn is known for having several side character roles in huge films such as Step Brothers, The Holiday and Anchorman, but has recently stepped into lead roles – most notably, Disney+’s Agatha All Along, which was one of the streaming services most popular shows in 2024.
Her portrayal as powerful witch Agatha Harkness in the show has many convinced she’d be perfect for the role.
Helena Bonam Carter is also a popular choice, with odds at 11/5 – the actress is known for her more villainous roles, one of her most famous roles being Bellatrix Lestrange in the Harry Potter films.
Also in the rumor mill to play Mother Gothel is The Substance star, Demi Moore, 10/3, acting legend Meryl Streep 9/1, and Australian actress (and not to mention star of the musical, Moulin Rouge!), Nicole Kidman – 20/1.
