Before heading off into the lush greenery that is the Daintree Rainforest, you should find out the dangers which may be lurking within.

What is the most dangerous animal in the Daintree rainforest?

Daintree Rainforest

The World Heritage-listed site is one of the world’s oldest surviving rainforest, with a completely unique ecosystem. However, despite its beauty, the rainforest is home to a number of dangerous creatures! So, follow our easy guide and find out which animals you should avoid during your trek amidst the rainforest!

Crocodiles

By far Australia’s most dangerous creature around, the Saltwater Crocodiles are known for being the biggest known retile alive. They are truly unique creatures, real-life dinosaurs, as they have been at the top of the food chain for millions of years. They can be found in the murky waters of the Daintree Rainforest, and even found in the shallow shorefront of Cape Tribulation. They are incredibly fast and strong, able to sneak up on their prey by camouflaging in the dark brown waters of the region. Unfortunately for us, we fall under the category prey with these crocs, so make sure to stay clear of the waters, and to be aware of any crocodile signs.

Snakes

Snakes get a bad reputation, especially in Australia, where many venomous snakes roam. However, within the Daintree Rainforest, the majority of the 43 species living within are not venomous at all. However, still encountering one in the wild can be a scary sight, as snakes can be aggressive if surprised. To avoid this, make sure to stomp your feet in areas with long grass and rock crevices, as the vibrations should scare the snakes off.

Ticks

They might be tiny, these creatures pack quite a punch. A gruesome creature that burrows themselves in the skin to feed on the blood of mammals, birds, and even reptiles. Humans are common victims with ticks, with the creatures hopping onto an individual’s bare ankle or arm when trekking through the thick greenery. Opt to wear pants and long shirts when hiking the region to avoid getting a tick that carries diseases such as Lymes disease.

Cassowaries

Cassowary are one of the most amazing sights to see within the rainforest, but they can also be quite dangerous. With large dagger-sharp claw son the bottom of each foot, cassowaries can jump up and kick their predator when exposed, causing serious damage to the victim. When seeing a cassowary, don’t approach, and simply admire from a safe distance. If you are too close and they feel threatened, slowly back away and put your arms high in the air to make yourself look as tall as possible.

Feral Pigs

They might be a surprising sight to see within the lush rainforest of the Daintree, but these feral pigs have become locals since their introduction by European settlers. They are a pest and typically are rarely seen by travellers. However, if seen, they can be quite dangerous creatures, with them charging at visitors who can threaten the pigs.
