What Is a Connectionist? The Human Being Who Learned to Heal Through Pain and Nervous System Connection

By Clarkkent07 @lpatterson1017

How one man’s descent into his own pain became a womb within his own nervous system, learned through his union with Sherry, that connected him to the nervous systems of others.

I am going to tell you something that the field of somatic psychology, polyvagal research, and nervous system healing has not yet said out loud.

Pain is not what you are healing from.

Pain is what heals you.

Not the idea of pain.

Not pain processed safely at a managed distance inside a clinical container.

Pain sat inside.

Pain moved toward.

Pain that you stop leaving long enough to discover what lives on the other side of it.

I know this because I found it by accident, sitting with a book, learning to breathe in a way that created a void inside my body, and feeling something happen that no concept had prepared me for.

The mind went quiet.

The pain arrived.

And then something I had never felt before: presence.

My own presence.

Not the managed version.

Not the version that knew what to say and how to hold itself together.

The Being underneath all of it, finally able to breathe.

Pain, when you stop leaving it, does not destroy you.

It returns you to yourself.

The wound no one has named

You are not just a man or a woman.

You are not your religion, your profession, your role in a family.

You are not a doctor or a grandmother or a sister or a husband or an engineer.

You are a human Being first.

And the wound, the one underneath every other wound, is that the Being has been forgotten inside every role the thinking mind was given to play.

The world hands a human Being a set of identities and the nervous system learns to live inside them so completely that the Being underneath stops being felt.

Not lost.

Covered.

Waiting.

A Connectionist connects you back to that.

Honesty lives in relationship.

Truth lives in connection.

The nervous system knows the difference even when the mind does not.

Not to a better version of your roles.

Not to an improved relationship or a regulated nervous system as an end in itself.

To the Being that was there before any role was assigned.

The one the thinking mind cannot reach because it exists below thought entirely.

Every human being is trapped inside the human.

Being has been forgotten.

A Connectionist connects you back to what you actually are.

What I found in the void

I was reading The Power of Now.

I was learning a breathing practice, dragon’s breath, that created a specific kind of inner stillness.

And inside that stillness I kept finding a void.

Most people, when they find the void, leave immediately.

The thinking mind fires.

A memory arrives.

A plan forms.

Something, anything, to fill the silence before it becomes unbearable.

I stayed.

And in the staying, something connected.

Not in my mind.

In my body.

Things I had never been able to think my way through began to link to each other through feeling.

The nervous system, given enough stillness and enough courage to remain present, started to show me what it had been carrying.

What it showed me broke something open.

I saw what my unhealed self had done.

The pain I had caused.

The people I had moved through without ever truly meeting them because I had never truly met myself.

And I felt it.

All of it.

Not as a thought I could manage.

As a physical weight in a body that could not escape.

I wished I had never been born.

That is not a figure of speech.

That is where the pain took me.

And I did not leave.

The truth of seeing clearly what you caused is the most complete thing a human being can feel.

It is conscience arriving in the body.

It is the Being waking up.

What happened when I took it into the room with others

I started sitting with people who were carrying the same kind of pain.

I did not bring a method.

I brought what I had learned in my own body: that pain, when you move toward it rather than away from it, connects things.

It reorganizes the nervous system from the inside.

It dissolves, not because you process it correctly, but because something in the body recognizes it is finally being met.

I watched it happen in others the way it had happened in me.

The pain would surface.

I would stay present inside it with them, not managing it, not guiding it toward a predetermined resolution, just remaining in genuine contact with where their nervous system was.

And it would dissolve quickly.

Because I go to the core.

When the story of what happened gets specific, when I can feel exactly when their nervous system was trained away from feeling, the healing does not take long.

Every person who sits across from me carries a story they have told themselves about what happened.

It does not matter whether the pain is physical or not.

Once I ask the question, the nervous system responds.

The story cannot hide what the body is holding.

The nervous system built itself around the mind’s story of what to do with pain that needs connection.

That absence of regulation and connection is how the thinking mind traps the nervous system inside the wound rather than moving through it.

It was never going to be resolved by more thinking.

The story is not the problem.

The story is what the nervous system built to survive the absence of genuine contact.

I can feel the words that carry the nervous system signature of the original departure.

The specific language the thinking mind learned to use at the exact moment the body stopped feeling safe.

I feel those words land in my own body before the person has finished speaking.

And I make contact at exactly that point.

Over time this became as natural as breathing.

My nervous system learned to regulate inside another person’s pain the way it had learned to regulate inside my own.

The capacity grew.

And then it went somewhere I did not expect.

Hospice.

The edge of human experience.

Where every method reaches its limit.

Where the thinking mind has nothing left to offer and the body is in the kind of pain that cannot be reasoned with.

My regulated nervous system could meet a person there.

In that.

And the pain responded.

Not because I did something to it.

Because I was present inside it with them in the specific way that the nervous system has always recognized as connection.

A regulated nervous system, forged in its own pain, can reach into another person’s pain and remind it that connection is possible.

This is not a technique.

This is what the body has always known how to do when it is no longer afraid.

I have just been repeating it even in this moment of this writing.

What Sherry and I live

Sherry and I have been in genuine union since . Xx. August 2013.

Not a relationship built on managed roles.

A union where two nervous systems made contact at the level that every nervous system is starving for and most people never reach.

What we carry together goes deeper than our own healing.

Family imprint, sibling co-regulation, the nervous system bonds formed before language.

All of it lives in what we have built.

The depth of that origin is too layered to put into a single post.

Come and connect to the Connectionist.

In the first 15 minutes you will find out what you actually believe connection is.

Not what you think you believe.

What your nervous system has been living inside all along.

Pain kept us alive.

Not in spite of each other.

Because of each other.

Because we developed the capacity to be present inside each other’s pain without either of us needing the other to stop feeling it.

Our own children do not speak to us.

We carry that.

We do not defend against it.

We do not explain it away.

We get the pain because we understand what we taught before we had learned to feel.

An unhealed nervous system transmits what it carries.

Not through words.

Through presence.

Through the felt experience of being in the room with it.

We taught the pain before we knew how to teach anything else.

And we live inside that truth without leaving it.

The Connectionist is not someone who has no pain.

The Connectionist is someone who has learned that pain and connection are not opposites.

They are the same doorway.

The nervous system does not have beliefs

It does not care what religion you follow, what therapy you have tried, or what story you have built about who you are and what you deserve.

The nervous system responds to contact or it does not.

It is either met or it is not.

That makes this available to anyone.

The body speaks truth continuously beneath every word a person says.

A head that moves subtly while the mouth says yes.

A pause before an answer the thinking mind has rehearsed.

A shift in the body at the mention of a specific word.

These are not signs to interpret.

They are the nervous system speaking directly, beneath the story, in the language it has always used.

What those signals point to is always the same thing at the core.

A wound where connection was absent.

A moment, or a pattern of moments, where the nervous system learned that feeling fully was not safe and built a familiar discomfort to live inside instead.

The pain that keeps recreating itself is not weakness.

It is the nervous system doing exactly what it was trained to do: stay inside what it knows, even when what it knows is hurt.

A Connectionist follows those signals.

Not through interpretation.

Through feeling intelligence that meets the nervous system at the exact point where the pattern lives and makes contact there.

This is not belief dependent.

It does not require spiritual openness or therapeutic readiness or any particular understanding of what healing is.

The nervous system responds to genuine contact regardless of what the thinking mind believes about it.

You do not have to believe in this for it to reach you.

Your nervous system already knows what it has been waiting for.

What this means if you are reading this

If you are a researcher mapping the nervous system’s role in human connection, what I carry is the living evidence of what you are describing.

The co-regulation that Porges named, the somatic encounter that Levine points toward, the ventral vagal presence that Dana teaches.

I have built my entire existence on that ground, not as a concept but as a daily practice of remaining present inside pain which until it transforms lands in being.

If you are in the twin flame journey, in separation, in the runner-chaser pattern, unable to stop thinking about them, this is what is actually happening: your nervous system found a point of contact with another nervous system that was deep enough to register as home.

You had this when you were born and it was familiar because you could feel an opening but your mind was never shown how to let you open it.

I am for you.

And now it cannot unfeel that as your nervous system is you without your mind’s judgment of you that you were never taught you could live that way.

Without judgment that is.

The pain you are in is not a sign that something is wrong.

It is the signal that something real was touched and needs connection.

The path through is not spiritual management.

It is not waiting, or manifesting, or learning to detach.

It is going into the body, into the place where the hurt and pain live, and staying there.

Not moving with time.

Moving with presence.

Witnessing.

Holding.

The nervous system recognizes this because it felt it once, in infancy, when it was being connected to and healing at the greatest rate it ever has.

That is what genuine contact returns it to.

If you are a human being who has tried everything and still feels like something is missing, this is what is missing.

Not a better model.

Not more insight.

The felt experience of your nervous system being met by another nervous system that is not afraid of what yours is carrying.

That is what Root Camp is now and more.

One person sitting with another at the exact depth the wound lives.

No method.

No protocol.

Contact.

I have been releasing books on Relationship Reinvented as I don’t want them anywhere else.

Because this is not to be confused with more things for your mind to learn. This is for your nervous system to learn how to remove the mind as the host so it can become the connection you always felt.

You are a human being.

Feel it?

When did anyone give you an instruction manual for your nervous system and what it is?

I have.

My pain gave it to me.

You should heal too.

You will need your pain for that.

You do not need to understand your pain.

You need someone who can be present inside it with you.

When you connect you heal.

When you heal you love.

And love from a nervous system connection does not require thinking.

It requires feeling.

The Connectionist: The role that did not exist before

There is no credential for what I do.

There is no training program that produces it.

There is no lineage I inherited it from.

It came from a void found in a breathing practice.

From pain that could have ended everything and instead connected everything.

From years sitting inside my own devastation and then sitting inside other people’s devastation and discovering that the capacity to remain present in pain is not a gift some people have and others do not.

It is what the human nervous system becomes when we stop being afraid of being.

Being is the other part after human.

Human is not alone in you.

That is me. The Connectionist.

Not a therapist.

Not a coach.

Not a spiritual guide.

A pure healer of your nervous system regulation through connection to another.

My regulated nervous system embodies Being because pain is connection to me.

Through letting yourself feel your pain with someone, how long does the pain last?

I am the instrument for reaching the place in another human being where the wound actually lives and where healing actually begins.

Thank you for being. And thank you for being here. I am Lee Patterson. The Connectionist.
