Many of you are starting your wedding planning business by working for family members and friends. If you are charging them for your services, you must treat them as any other paying clients and have them sign your contract.
In fact, even if you are providing your services free, you should have a written statement outlining the services you are providing at no charge. This will help avoid misunderstandings between you and the bride and keep your relationship with her intact.
If you have just started your business and don’t have a contract, talk to an attorney about creating one for you. I know there are a lot of sample contracts on the Internet and in books but it’s best to have one written specially for you. An attorney can write a contract that takes into consideration the laws in your state, your business entity (sole proprietorship, partnership, limited liability company or corporation) and the specific products and services that you offer.
