On today's very special episode of A Tasting at The Murder Table, we travel to Iceland (aka the Land of Fire and Ice) and sample two very unique spirits...
One is called Brennivin Aquavit which is often referred to as Black Death.
The other is an Icelandic Single Malt Whiskey from Eimwerk Distillery called Floki. The Floki expression that we sampled is their Young Malt - Sheep Dung Smoked Reserve.
Black Death and Sheep Dung. That's weird, right? We definitely think it is, but since we're always willing to try something new, or at the very least, something a little unusual, we went into this tasting with our minds and palates wide open!
For those of you that are unfamiliar with these spirits, here are a few words about each spirit taken directly from their maker's websites:
Brennivin: The secret to Brennivin, Iceland's signature spirit, is the balance between the pure, soft, Icelandic water and the robust, savory, flavor of caraway. While the precise origin of the recipe is unknown, caraway is one of few spices that grow wild in Iceland, despite the harsh climate. Brennivín was first introduced in 1935, when prohibition in Iceland was partially lifted. A black label was chosen in order for the product to look unappealing and limit demand. The label had the opposite effect and Brennivín quickly became a popular drink. Today, the Brennivín label is a well-known symbol for Iceland's signature drink - and of Iceland itself.Floki Young Malt - Sheep Dung Smoked Reserve: Our latest addition to our collection is our carefully crafted sheep dung smoked reserve. The barley used in this malt has been smoked using generations old tradition of smoking using sheep dung in Iceland. The result is truly one of a kind with a complex flavor profile and sweet smoky notes to compliment the intense flavor of the Icelandic barley. This release is a limited reserve of a selection of single barrel bottling from our distillery. First released in November 2016 in a couple of casks, in 2017 we will be releasing 10 more casks in limited bottlings of 500 numbered bottles.Just so you know, we went a little off the rails during this review, so be sure to have a stiff drink handy before you hit the play button on the following video. Our advice: buckle up! It's gonna be a bumpy (and hopefully HILARIOUS!) ride...
