Verisign: As Of June 30 There Are 334.6 Million Domains In The World; Up 12.9% From Last Year

(NASDAQ: VRSN), today announced that approximately 7.9 million domain name registrations were added to the internet in the second quarter of 2016, bringing the total number of domain name registrations to approximately 334.6 million across all top-level domains (TLDs) as of June 30, 2016.

The increase of approximately 7.9 million domain name registrations globally equates to a growth rate of 2.4% over the first quarter of 2016.

Domain name registrations have grown by 38.2 million, or 12.9%, year over year.

The .com and .net TLDs experienced aggregate growth in the second quarter of 2016, reaching a combined total of approximately 143.2 million domain name registrations in the domain name base representing a 7.3% increase year over year.

As of June 30, 2016, the .com domain name base equaled 127.5 million domain name registrations, while the .net domain name base equaled 15.8 million domain name registrations.

New .com and .net domain name registrations totaled 8.6 million during the second quarter of 2016.

In the second quarter of 2015, new .com and .net domain name registrations totaled 8.7 million.

According to the Verisign Domain Name Industry Brief, the total number of ccTLD domain name registrations (country codes) were approximately 149.9 million in the first quarter of 2016, with an increase of 1.4 million domain name registrations, or a 1% increase compared to the first quarter of 2016.

ccTLDs increased by approximately 11.7 million domain name registrations, or 8.5%, year over year. Without including .tk, ccTLD domain name registration growth (.tk domain names are basically free)  quarter-over-quarter was 1.2% and growth year-over- year was 10.7%. The top 10 ccTLDs, as of June 30, 2016 were: .tk (Tokelau) .cn (China) .de (Germany) .uk (United Kingdom) .ru (Russian Federation) .nl (Netherlands) .br (Brazil) .eu (European Union) .au (Australia) .fr (France). The top 10 ccTLDs composing 67.3% of all ccTLD domain name registrations.
