While DC continues potentially squandering characters we love like Superman and Batman in Zack Snyder movies, Marvel continues using their movies to help us fall in love with characters we may not known very well (Iron Man, Thor) or like all that much (Captain America). As such, the second full length Captain America: Winter Soldier trailer which premiered during the Super Bowl on Sunday seems to have arrived just in time to remind us that Batman Vs. Superman is still 2 years away while this new Captain America movie is a mere two months away.
The first Winter Soldier trailer, released last October, established tone (1970s political thriller), returning characters (Cap, Black Widow, Nick Fury), new characters (Robert Redford as a potential baddie, a sidekick called Falcon, and a metal-armed villain called the Winter Soldier), and big action set pieces (SHIELD hellicarriers falling from the sky, highway showdown between Fury and Winter Solider, rooftop showdown between Cap and Winter Soldier). Even with the presence of Winter Soldier, it presented a version of the film in which the primary opposition will be more of the enemy from within variety. This new trailer aims to reveal a little more about Winter Soldier without spoiling his identity while also giving us a bit more of Anthony Mackie’s Falcon.

Kudos to Marvel for still refraining from spoiling the Winter Soldier’s identity much like how Sony is trying not to give away a much rumored potential death in Amazing Spider-Man 2. Winter Solider is adapted from one of Captain America’s most famous comic book story lines meaning their core audience already knows who’s behind that mask. That’s probably why Marvel allowed their actors openly discuss it in an exclusive preview of The Winter Soldier included on the Thor: The Dark World Blu-Ray where you’d assume they’re preaching to the converted. For the trailers being released to the general public they are still keeping it a secret.

Captain America: The First Avenger remains the lowest-grossing, domestic and worldwide, Marvel Studios release beyond The Incredible Hulk. However, it was a crucial film in the lead-up to The Avengers, and now Winter Soldier returns not only Captain America but also carries over Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson), and even Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) from The Avengers. This is going to feel far more like a direct sequel to The Avengers than either Iron Man 3 or Thor: The Dark World. It remains to be seen how much of a post-Avengers bump it will receive at the box office, but the trailers continue to masterfully build anticipation.
As they did with the first Captain America, Stephen McFeely & Christopher Markus wrote the screenplay this time around while director Joe Johnston was replaced with The Russo Brothers, primarily known for TV sitcoms Arrested Development, Community, and Happy Endings. Marvel is already so high on the nearly finished Winter Solider they’ve initiated negotiations with the Russos to direct the inevitable Captain America 3. Based on the trailers alone, we can’t blame them.
Captain America: The Winter Soldier begins rolling out in foreign territories in late March in advance of a scheduled domestic debut on April 4, 2014.
