Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” has “always been a place of peace” for Tears for Fears’ frontwoman Brittany Shields. She was dealing with becoming recently sober (at the time had just hit 100 days), along with her grandfather’s death, and felt a sense of helplessness.

Read more about what Brittany had to say about the cover- how they came to recording it, and what the song means to her.

“Since I was a kid, this particular song has always deeply resonated with me. I could feel it in my bones and in my soul. The same feeling took over when Cory played me the first 10 seconds of the instrumental he’d come up with. I don’t think we even intended for it to become a cover, but I started singing Mad World over it, and it just felt perfect. This song still hits every time I hear it or sing it. You know how there’s always that ONE song that just makes you feel reaaaallly good? It just moves you or makes you think about things differently. That’s how this song has always been for both Cory and I. We’re hoping to move people the way we were first moved by this song. We’ve never played a cover live, so I’d love to be able to see how people react when they hear it for the first time.” -Brittney Shields
