It's been a while since I thoroughly enjoyed a romantic comedy film. Now don't get me wrong. I love the genre but the formula - boy-meets-girl (and vice versa) played by good looking and well-known actors - has been reused countless times. It does guarantee box office hit, I'll give you that but it's okay to take risks once in awhile.
Take Spring Films and Viva Films' 2017 rom-com offering for instance.
Kita Kita

A blind woman falls in love with a man who uses kindness and humor to make a connection with her.
The film starts by introducing our lead character, Lea played by Alessandra De Rossi. She is a Filipina working as a Tourist Guide in Sapporo, Japan. Just from the first few scenes, we already learned a lot about her life in Japan.
Things didn't work out well at first but life in Sapporo became brighter when Lea met the love of her life. Lea and the Japanese guy has been engaged for quite some time. In fact, they already had marriage plans but the guy kept postponing until the day Lea saw the truth.
On that same moment, extreme stress got the best of her. Lea lost her vision causing her to change the way she sees Sapporo.
Enter the neighbor named Tonyo played by Empoy Marquez. He is a funny Filipino guy who has been working for 10 years in Japan but is new in Sapporo. Since he doesn't know anyone in the area, he took the chance to introduce himself to Lea. Because of the sudden turn of events, she doesn't respond to his friendliness.
But Tonyo never gave up on her. One day, Lea accepts him into his life creating a bond so strong, it's unbreakable.
Unconventional and Beautiful
Kita Kita is unconventional. The producers took the risk of presenting something unusual. To everyone's surprise that so-called "unconventional" worked wonders!
Casting actor and comedian Empoy Marquez alongside the beautiful and talented actress Alessandra De Rossi is the best decision ever. Sure Marquez is not the cute guy next door but the role given to him and his portrayal made everyone fall for him. It's also worth mentioning that Marquez and De Rossi has an incredible chemistry making their "AlEmpoy" love team a huge hit.
Besides unconventional, Kita Kita is also absolutely beautiful - visually and emotionally. While touring the beautiful Sapporo, we know that there is a grand plan at the end. Kita Kita prepared us by giving a simple path to follow. As we slowly take it, we learn more and more about the characters gaining a deeper understanding of their life, friendship and love.
Sigrid Bernardo's Kita Kita proves that unconventional can also be beautiful.
I hope you were able to catch Kita Kita in theatres. If not, pretty sure they will show it on Cable soon. Please don't miss it again. This film is worth the watch! 10/10 IMDb
