Treatment of Frozen Shoulder in Ayurveda

Frozen shoulder is also called adhesive capsulitis. It is a common disorder that causes stiffness, pain in the shoulder. This results in the loss of normal range of motion in the shoulder. This disability can get serious, if it is left untreated.

Causes of Frozen Shoulder

The exact cause of frozen shoulder is unknown. It may be due to the swelling, scarring, thickening, and shrinkage of the capsule which surrounds the normal shoulder joint, and becomes unable to move. There are also many reasons which can result in the frozen shoulder like hormonal imbalance, joint injuries, diabetes, or a weakened immune system.

These include:
  1. Rotator cuff injury
  2. Bursitis
  3. Broken Arm
  4. Tendinitis
  5. Stroke
  6. Recovery from surgery (like chest or breast surgery)

Some Health Conditions that May Cause Frozen Shoulder

  1. Diabetes
  2. Tuberculosis
  3. Chronic inflammatory arthritis
  4. Hyperthyroidism
  5. Hypothyroidism
  6. Cardiovascular disease
  7. Parkinson's disease

Risk Factors of Frozen Shoulder

  1. Age: People with ages 40 to 60 are more prone to have frozen shoulder.
  2. Gender: Women are more prone to have frozen shoulder than men.
  3. Diabetes: People with diabetes are more prone to develop frozen shoulder, and symptoms may be more serious. The reasons are unclear.

Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder

  1. Pain in the shoulder.
  2. Pain and stiffness which makes shoulder unable to move.
  3. Sensation in the upper arm.

Ayurvedic Treatment for Frozen Shoulder

According to Ayurveda, the imbalance of tri doshas in the body can cause any disease. In Ayurveda frozen shoulder termed as Apabahuka, which occurs due to imbalance of Vata and Kapha. Apabahuka is a disease that normally affects the Amsa sandhi (shoulder joint). Ayurveda provides various herbs which are effective in the treatment of the frozen shoulder. These herbs are used to prepare various herbal medicines.

It also improves blood circulation. It is a very good anti-oxidant, acts as a nervine tonic and soothes nerve. Hence it is useful to relieve numbness. Ashwagandha improves the quality and quantity of sperm count.

Dosage: 1 tablespoon twice daily with lukewarm water, after half an hour of meals.

4. Orthovita Oil:

The ingredients of Orthovita Oil are Shul Gajendra Oil, Gandhapura oil, Turpentine Oil, Saindhavadi Taila, Prasarinioi, and Camphor. It is 100% pure natural oil and free from chemicals, extra colors, additives, fillers, and yeast, etc. This oil supports healthy bones, joints, and muscles. It also promotes the strength of the overall body and physical features. Thus it is very effective in the treatment of the frozen shoulder. It reduces stiffness, pain in the shoulder and relaxes shoulder joints and muscles.

Direction: The oil should be massaged locally twice a day for 10 to 15 minutes.

The herbs have anti-inflammatory properties and help in reducing pain and swelling of joints. Thus Yograj Guggul tablets are very useful in the management of frozen shoulder.

Dosage: 2 tablets twice daily with lukewarm water.
