Three Tips to Reducing the Stress of an Automobile Accident

Being in a car accident can be extremely traumatizing and have long-lasting repercussions. These long-term effects go beyond simple physical damage to your vehicle; they can include emotional and physical injury to you or your loved ones, as well as collateral damage to items in your car. There can even be damage to structures or other things in the vicinity. In some cases, your car accident may happen while your car is parked. Because of this, it’s important to know what to do if you’re ever in an accident.

However, because a car accident is so traumatizing, it can be difficult to know what to do, especially immediately afterward. That’s why it’s essential to have a plan of action in place ahead of time. This can be anything from having an emergency contact list to having a reputable attorney on retainer. For example, if you live in Westchester County, New York, you can likely find a good one by using a search engine and looking for a personal injury attorney in White Plains and surrounding areas.

Three Tips to Reducing the Stress of an Automobile Accident

This action plan is in addition to the usual things that everyone knows to have ready. After all, you’re going to have your license and car insurance handy, as well as your registration. This is what you should plan for in the event that you are involved in a serious accident. With that in mind, here are three things you should plan for in the event of a car accident.

  1. List of Emergency Contacts – In the immediate aftermath of a serious accident, your car most likely isn’t able to be driven. Don’t let yourself be stranded someplace. Have a ready list of people that you can depend on to be available if you need them. If you don’t have two or three people that you know will be able to pick you up and get you home, make alternate plans as a backup. Uber or Lyft provide near-immediate options to make sure that you get home safely.
  2. Knowing a Reputable Repair Shop – In the event that your car is left in an undrivable state after your accident, the last thing you want is to leave it on the side of the road. In most cases, you won’t even have that option. Rather than pay to have it towed twice, having a regular repair guy is worth its weight in gold.

Not only will you know what to expect when you call the shop the following day, you and your regular mechanic will already have an established rapport. This trust will go a long way to making you more comfortable about your car’s repair status during this trying time.

  1. Have an Emergency Kit – You won’t always be in an accident in a locale where the police or emergency services can reach you. You might not even be involved in an accident with another driver. In that case, you might be alone for quite some time. In this case, having an emergency kit in your car can be the difference between life and death.

You can purchase an emergency kit or make your own. The important thing is that your kit has enough food and water for three days for everyone who might be in your car. This can be water bottles and cereal bars, or sealed survival bars. It’s possible to purchase food and water kits that have sealed nutrition blocks, each of which provides a full day’s worth of nutrition and take up minimal space.

You also want something that will provide environmental protection appropriate for your location. If it’s winter, have a couple of blankets in your car. If you have room, a spare pair of clothes is also a good idea. Hypothermia in winter is deadly, and being able to change out of wet clothing will save your life. Check out a list of what else you should pack here.

Being in a car accident is a stressful event. Having an action plan where you know what to do will significantly reduce any additional stress that comes from any uncertainty. With these three items in your arsenal, you’ll be better prepared to handle what comes after an accident.
