Elizabeth Holmes, the founder and CEO of Theranos (a privately held health technology company) has been indicted on federal wire fraud charges.
Holmes, who dropped out of Stanford at 19 to start the company, allegedly engaged in a multi-million dollar scheme to defraud investors, as well as a scheme to defraud doctors and patients, according to a release from the US Attorney’s office.
She is charged with two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and nine counts of wire fraud.
In March 2018, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission sued Holmes, accusing her of fraudulently raising more than $700 million from investors through false or exaggerated claims.
