The background

Angels is the first track from the London trio’s The xx’s eagerly anticipated second album Coexist, which is due for release on 10 September 2012. The band posted the video on their Facebook page with the message, “it’s been a long time since we’ve played you anything new … We’ve been playing this song live recently, so it feels good to share with you the version we’ve been working on for so long.” The xx’s first album was released back in 2009 to widespread critical acclaim.

Second album will be different from the first

Speaking exclusively to music mag NME  singer and guitarist Romy Madley Croft said the new songs show the evolution of the band over the past few years. “I’ve been thinking that I hope people enjoy it as a separate thing. The first album exists – we’re not trying to make it again.” The Guardian said that “in the nicest possible way, Angels could easily have come from that first album.”

Baby-making music

“Although Romy Croft’s vocals may sound like a lovesick whimper, “Angels” is a thunderous return for the band, and an apt choice for the first single,” praised CHARTattack, which said that the “furtive” guitar lines and “subdued” percussion “rattle around like the memories that mull around your brain at 3AM, keeping you up with breathless anticipation of when you’ll see them again next. It’s more than just a triumphant comeback, it’s the first great baby-making song of the year.”

Fans bowled over

The lion’s share of responses from fans of the band has been overwhelmingly positive. “I love The xx so much, this is by far my favorite song by them. Makes me stop and think,” said Funkidelikitty at YouTube. “I especially love listening to the XX during the night because emptiness and space are what pervasive in their musics,” commented FYLize.
