The Soulkeeper Series by GP Ching – Sometimes You Just Need a Little Faith

By Hippiebookworm @HippieBookworm

funtimesIt’s been a while since I’ve had an opportunity to write. Normally I’ll take little breaks from blogging when I have a lot of work to accomplish. But this time, I’m happy to say I’ve just been too busy playing. Rock concerts, dinosaurs in the Botanical Gardens, afternoons on the beach and time spent with family and friends have been eating up my free time recently. Thanks to all my loyal readers for being so patient with me.

I can tell you that while I’ve been playing, I’ve also been reading – of course. I was looking for some new audio books when I ran across this book called The Soulkeeper by GP Ching. I’m not one for reading a book based on the cover art, but this one got to me. I had no preconceived notions about what I was about to get myself into. In the span of 3 weeks, I devoured all 6 books in the series. Any free time I got, even driving in my car, was dedicated to finishing out another book.

Below are some quick descriptions of the books and my review.

Book 1: The Soulkeeper

Jacob Lau, 14 years old, of Hawaii wakes to find himself recovering from a car accident in a hospital. His mother is missing and Jacob wad discovered behind the wheel of the car at the accident scene.

Because no one is around to take care of him, he’s shipped off to Paris, IL to live with his uncle and his family. While there, Jacob finds out that his neighbor is a fallen angel and that he has been genetically blessed with a special ability to wield water – what his neighbor calls a Soulkeeper.

With his new found power, Jacob is thrown into a supernatural battle that has been brewing since the beginning of time – Satan vs. God.

Book 2: Weaving Destiny

In book one, Jacob Lau was cast into a spiritual war with Satan. Now he’s part of a small army of Soulkeepers and Helpers who are working towards ridding the world of Lucifer’s influence.

In the midst of everything, his girlfriend, Malini, is feeling left out. Outside of being able to identify fallen angels, or Watchers, by their scent, she seems to have no Soulkeeper power. However, her part in the last battle has put a bullseye on her back. Will Malini ever figure out what her purpose in the Soulkeeper would is?

Book 3: Return to Eden

Jacob, Malini, Dr. Silva, Gideon and Lilly are part of a small Soulkeeper army is Paris, IL who have been in a battle with Lucifer and the other Watchers for the past year. The time has come to recruit more Soulkeepers, but how does one angel, one fallen angel, two teenagers and a single mom go about finding the other soldiers?

After finding, Eden, a protected school for Soulkeepers, the group goes about locating and recruiting each genetically gifted person that has activated their Soulkeeper gene. Unfortunately, they are in a race against time as Lucifer uses their mission to distract them from his true purpose.

Book 4: Soul Catcher

Dane Michaels is just like every other human teenage boy except that his best friends are Soulkeepers and he spent part of last summer in Hell with Lucifer.  Now his friends are racing Lucifer to find the last Soulkeeper, a Hopi Indian named Cheveyo.

On their journey to find Cheveyo, an unexpected blessing puts Dane and Malini in the middle of Nod, the land where demons reside, fighting not only for the lost Soulkeeper, but for their lives as well.

Book 5: Lost Eden

Lucifer has discovered that Fate, an immortal who is to remain neutral in the battle of good and evil, has changed destiny by saving Dane. Now he demands a consequence from God. Instead, God decides to make the Devil an offer. Six of Lucifer’s curses versus six of God’s gifts meant to win over the hearts of men. Once the last gift is released, whoever has the most hearts devoted to them in the end will banish the other from the earth for 1,000 years.

It’s up to Gabriel, God’s messenger, and the Soulkeepers to keep the scales tipped in God’s favor.

Book 6: The Last Soulkeeper

It’s the middle of the Apocalypse. Lucifer has begun unleashing his curses on the earth and people are lining up in droves to escape pledge allegiance to him in order to save themselves from his plight. It seems the more people discover about his actual identity, the more they’ll pledge allegiance to him in order to save themselves.

As Lucifer becomes more powerful, an underground Christian movement begins to take root. The Tom Sawyer Society does their part to support one another in order to prevent themselves from having to give their souls to the Devil. They also help the Soulkeepers keep alive the one saving hope they all have.

This is the end. By the end of the book, the fate of Soulkeepers and all the rest of mankind will be decided.

The Review

This was a great story about discovering who you are, what your place in the world is and what side of the line you will stand on when it counts. Each book built on top of the other and the continuous story was seamless. It’s a timeless story of Good vs. Evil, but told in a whole new way.

From a theological standpoint, you’ll have to overlook a few things. The book series seems to mesh belief systems and its soldiers are sometimes caught in moral dilemmas in which they need to make a bad moral judgment call in order to serve the greater good. For instance, they steal an RV in order to conceal themselves as they head into city where Lucifer has taken up residence.

I would recommend this book to teens and young adults alike who are fans of supernatural fantasy stories. If you like Divergent or The Hunger Games, you’ll love The Soulkeeper series. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if one day we see Hollywood take interest and find this series being played out on the big screen. I’d actually welcome it. 5 Stars!
