A letter brings him back to his Amish family. It will take someone truly extraordinary to make him stay. Roman is on the verge of leaving the Amish ways. Feeling confined by the strict rules, he longs to do something more with his life. But when things don’t go as planned, Roman’s prospects outside of the community dwindle. Upon learning that his beloved grandmother has died and left a letter urging him to reconcile with his brother in Birch Creek, Roman decides to return home. But he doesn’t plan to stay for long.

Leanna Chupp has always made her own way in her small community of Birch Creek. Though some may call her unconventional—strange, even—Leanna is happy. Her unique outlook on life has meant she’s never had many suitors pursuing courtship, which Leanna doesn’t mind. She is content being single.

But when Roman and Leanna find themselves working together again, everything changes. Though neither fit squarely within the strictures of the Amish faith, their differences could be the very thing to help them form a deeper connection to their community and to each other. The question remains: will this strengthening bond be enough to make Roman stay for good?

I’m a blogger with the Fiction Guild’s Elite Reader Program, and I am very fortunate to be able to receive a lot of books that my mother and I love to read.  Today’s book is by Kathleen Fuller, and since she’s one of my mom, Gloria’s favorite authors, her assistance was enlisted to read and review this book, The Promise of a Letter since I knew my mom had already read Written in Love, which is another book in the “Amish Letters” series.  (See that review HERE.)

This book can be read as a standalone, but some of the unforgettable characters are continued from the first book, Written In Love.

The Promise of a Letter by Kathleen Fuller

Phoebe and Jalon are now married and expecting their first child. This story begins in Birch Creek, Ohio with Jalon’s unique sister Leanna Chupp working for their friend Daniel Raber in a small engine repair shop.  Leanna’s occupation is not the norm for an Amish woman.  Leanna is good at repairing motors and the customers love her.  She cannot sew, cannot cook, keeps a messy home but loves working in the repair shop. Because of her unconventional ways there are rumors and stories from the gossipers in the community.

Daniel’s brother Roman is very close to leaving the Amish community and wants to attend college to become an engineer. He needs financial assistance and has applied for a scholarship with several schools. Things are not working out and his prospects of finding a good job outside of the community has come to an end. Roman receives word that his beloved grandmother has died.  He did not attend her funeral he must go back to Birch Creek and visit her grave.  He does not plan to stay long.

Both Daniel and Roman receives a letter written by their grandmother right before she passed away with her one last request.  That they reconcile their differences.  Could they fulfill their grandmother’s request with all the pain between them?   Trying to patch things up Daniel gives Roman his job back. Roman is seeking forgiveness.

Leanna and Roman develop an unlikely friendship as they are working together again.  Both are single and happy that way..  I loved reading about their journey together and how their relationship grew.   A tragic turn at the shop brings Leanna and Roman together to help Daniel and his wife Barbara save their business.

Anytime I see a book written by Kathleen Fuller I know I will enjoy reading it.  This one is no exception!!

The Promise of a Letter by Kathleen Fuller Who is Kathleen Fuller?  Here’s what she says: “Just the facts…I was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, and now make my home in beautiful Geneva, Ohio. I’ve been married to James for 15 wonderful years (really, they have been wonderful!) We have three terrific children, three dogs, and an overwhelmed cat. We have also raised cattle, pigs, and chickens at various times over the years. We would have gone into the goat business, but I had to draw the line somewhere.

I started writing in 2000, and published my first short story a year later. Since then I have authored several short stories, novellas, novels, and have done a lot of freelance non-fiction work. I have also worked as an editor. I have a Masters degree in Special Education, emphasis on teaching the blind and visually impaired, and a Bachelors in Early Childhood/Elementary Education. I have taught all age groups ranging from age 4 to age 18. A few of my favorite things: my relationship with Christ, chocolate (of course!), autumn, a satisfying book, good friends, a sense of humor, people who don’t take themselves seriously, haunting melodies, NFL football, and did I mention chocolate?”

I received a paperback copy of this book without cost from the publisher through The Fiction Guild, a Thomas Nelson/Zondervan Elite Reader book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own, or in this case, my mom’s.
