One of the most common pieces of advice that social media and branding gurus seem fond of giving these days is that you should brand yourself.

how to brand yourself using social media
That's all well and good (and it's a philosophy we share when we help our clients develop social media strategies for their businesses).

But – all of that advice doesn’t really mean a dang thing if you don't understand what that means in the first place.

And I suspect that if you did know, you wouldn't be looking online for how to brand yourself using social media, right?

Each online branding expert has their own philosophies and techniques for sure. But if you're anything like most of our clients, you don't have time to sort through all of the hundreds of tips.

You need to know the secret to branding yourself online, and you need this info right now, without any added fluff or overused cliches.

So here's the minimalist guide to branding yourself online via social media.

It's easy.  Tell your story.

Why Storytelling Works as a Branding Technique

The power of a compelling story cannot be overstated. Telling your story is what gives life to your brand, transforming it from meaningless words and symbols to something more – something powerful and compelling.

The iconic large brands get this. Staples doesn't just sell pens and paper. They sell the ability to make your life "easy."  Apple doesn't sell techy toys – they sell the experience of being independent and innovative.

Telling your brand's story isn't just a tool for the large brands. In fact – this can be one of the easiest strategies for communicating your branding for a business of any size. It's the thing that levels the playing field when it comes to branding strategies accessible to brands both big and small.

What If My Brand Doesn't Really Have a Story?

If you don't think your brand has a story, then you've just not though of it in the right way!  Here's how to find your story if you haven't yet discovered it.

1.Include your personality in your brand

You are the only one that provides your products or services in your unique way. Play up that uniqueness! Be a standout!

2.Share your community involvement with your audience

This needs to be done in a way that is authentic, not gimmicky or false. But if you are involved in community initiatives, share that with your audience. Nothing makes you seem more real than being connected with a cause that's than just yourself.  Share your vision and passion with your audience – they might just partner with you!

3.Communicate the benefits of your brand – not just "what you do."

This is a good practice for many reasons – it keeps you focused on your customer and how you benefit them rather than focused on yourself.

Also, in telling your customers about how your product or service benefits them. Are you a virtual assistant?  It's not just about getting stuff done, it's about partnering with your clients to give them back the free time to build their dream future.  Are you a dentist marketing a practice?  You're giving your clients the confidence of a winning smile.  See the difference?

Telling your story is the simplest way to connect with your audience and help them see how your brand is unique in the marketplace. Stand out in the minds of your customers and share the story of your brand!

How are you sharing your story with your audience?  We'd love to hear – leave a comment below!
