For a few seasons now, Dolce and Gabbana has been pushing their high-status, royal-religion-inspired aesthetic, which has had a great success in terms of creative results, but not so much in terms of influence. Maybe, once again, the Italian label is too much ahead of the curve for others to notice. A few months ago, we did say that couture and very elegant clothes will start making a slight come-back, but it seems that it's taking longer than expected. However, it is great to see that in a forest of sportswear and deconstructed clothes, which at many times don't make much aesthetic sense, there are a few voices that place value on high aesthetics and elegance.
This meta-reason, if it can be said so, is though the secondary motive why the Dolce and Gabbana autumn-winter 2018-19 men's collection was great, the primary being its overwhelming aesthetic value. The collection did reference a lot of royal and religious elements, as this was once again, the core of the body of work, however, for this season, it was done in a more subtle and less-obvious ways. This is what made the collection better than those from previous seasons - the fact that the color combinations and prints, as well as the cuts and shapes themselves communicated the message. This way, the wearer can put more of his personality in the clothes and really make them his own.
We loved the stunningly rich materials, the unexpected color combinations (green and blue in majestic jewel shades) and the big bow ties that punctuated the outfits really well. Surely, blue, gold, beige, burgundy and red were some of the main colors in the palette, but we also loved the occasional green and pops of pink. The brocades and jacquards in bright colors and the opulent gold clearly made it the must-see collection of the season.
The autumn-winter 2018 menswear collection, which was appropriately titled "King's Angels" is just what the fashion world and the world at large need: a come-back of really high fashion, a demonstration of talent and craft and a sense of extreme exclusivity: we live in a world that lacks in many ways a value scale - if nothing rises above, nothing is really outstanding and this collection was indeed truly outstanding.
