The Benefits of Using Fish Oil in Your Dog’s Diet

By David13676 @dogspired

There are a  number of dog supplements available that can help with health issues. One commonly used supplement naturvet-SalmonOilis fish oil, primarily because it’s a good source of Omega 3 fatty acids. Some pet owners become familiar with fish oil when their dog has skin or coat issues (such as dry or itchy skin or hot spots), however, dogs that don’t have these problems can also benefit from this supplement. Their coat can get shinier and softer, and they might shed less.

There are other reasons to supplement your dog’s diet with fish oil. The Omega 3 fatty acids have been shown to help reduce inflammation, making it useful for dogs suffering from arthritis, stiff joints, allergies, and IBS (inflammatory bowel disease). It also helps regulate the immune system, can lower blood pressure, and improve brain function and cognitive abilities. Research has found that fish oil with Omega 3 fatty acids EPA and DHA can reduce the risk of heart problems, making it ideal for dogs affected by heart disease. Dogs with cancer and kidney disease can also benefit from fish oil supplements.

Fish oil is typically found in gel capsules or liquid form. (I’ve used both for my dogs , but found the liquid to be more convenient.) Among the companies that make fish oil in a liquid are Grizzly Salmon Oil, Ark Naturals, and NaturVet.
