The Adventure Podcast Episode 51: Outdoor Gear, Sustainability, and Waste

Posted on the 20 February 2019 by Kungfujedi @Kungfujedi

On this week's episode of The Adventure Podcast we jump deep into a topic that is a concern of many outdoor enthusiasts -- how to balance our concerns for the environment with the continuing onslaught of new gear. Each year, outdoor equipment manufacturers continue to make thousands of new products, some of which eventually end up in a landfill. My co-host Dave Adlard and I both get our fair share of new gear to test and have closets overflowing with jackets, packs, boots, and other items, yet we both regularly discuss our concerns for the environment. During our main topic segment this week we talk about our personal efforts to reuse, recycle, and regift outdoor gear, as well as the major push from within the industry itself to be much more eco-friendly. Some of those initiatives may come as a surprise to many of you.

Before jumping into that weighty topic however, we also take a look at the latest outdoor and adventure news stories. Topics this week include the lack of updates from the K2 winter expeditions, a new 24-hour elevation mark set by Kilian Jornet, and the end of the search for Shackleton's missing ship. Later in the show, during our gear segment, Dave and I discuss two products that we're currently testing, including a new set of true wireless earbuds from Skullcandy and running shoes from Saucony.
