Standing in the Middle of the Sea of Antiques at Panjiayuan (潘家園) - Where to Start?
It has always been tantalizing to some as to why some of us, including myself, are fascinated or even infatuated with antiques. Old thing, whether finely decorated or less-than-perfect readymades, are embedded with a sense of retrospective elements, attracting collectors to go on a lifelong 'treasure' hunt. If you happen to be one of them and are interested in antiques and collectibles, the market Panjiayuan, located at Southeast corner(東南角) of the Third Ring Road (三環路), must be included in your itinerary when traveling in Beijing. Panjiayuan appears to be more like a flea market rather than an array of luxurious antique shops and galleries. Granted, some could be quite expensive (as well as massive); but many are set at a reasonable price.

However, it could seem overwhelming for some visitors, especially for those who don't know how to speak Chinese, when looking for treasures at Panjiayuan since there are always too many antiques, shops, booths and people. So I am going to write you some tips of purchasing at Panjiayuan based on my first-hand experience:

  1. Usually more sellers, and thus more goods, are doing business at Panjiayuan on weekends.
  2. It is customary to bargain for most goods.
  3. Beware of fake antiques: the technique is to stroll through the market and take note of the mass-produced ones but pretending to be old and dirty.
  4. There are many shops on the side. You may find old things and antiques from places other than China as well. More cameras, typewriters and the like are selling at these shops.
  5. It's good to have companions who have similar interest or taste in things with you going together. But shopping alone will be much more efficient at Panjiayuan since there are simply too many to see. For safety concern, however, you may at least break up into pairs when visiting Panjiayuan.
  6. You may want to go to the bathroom before going to the market. There are some mobile public lavatories outside. But they might not seem to be very sanitary for everyone.
  7. Remember to bring your own snacks and beverages.

Happy hunting!
