Portable cutlery!

I love the idea of it!

There’s something about having your own handy cutlery set that makes you feel just a little bit special.

Of course, there’s also the handy fact that it’s more hygienic and you won’t end up getting fork shards in your dinner over the awful quality disposable plastic ones which, lets face it, aren’t too hygienic in themselves.

All in all, if you make yourself a lot of lunch boxes that don’t include a sandwich and an apple on the side, portable cutlery is a good way to go.

Some boxes include cutlery, sometimes a mini pair of chopsticks, sometimes a small fork or even a full knife, fork and spoon set but they all seem to have the limitation of size.

These portable sets usually have two parts, a handle and a fork head for example so it becomes a larger size, more like our usually every day metal cutlery.

Whenever I see an interesting portable cutlery set I snap it up as they will always come in handy.

Today’s set is by Smash, yes, the Nude Food Mover people!

Meet the Rubbish Free Cutlery Mover!

They come in a see through pod type case which is quite handy for telling which color you have without opening it.
For me, if the hubby and I have chosen different colours it would be rather annoying to pop the lid off and check each time whose is whose.

The pods are rather large coming in at almost 5 inches tall so these aren’t going to secrete easily and unnoticed into your back pocket.
If you use a backpack though, a side pocket would be a perfect housing for them.

One thing I noticed with both of these pods is that they don’t seem to slot together quite right.
There is always a bit of a gap between the two parts.
A lot of shaking tells me they’re not susceptible to opening more easily because of it but all that shaking did open up another problem for me.

When these are shaken they make quite a racket.
I suspect they would make you top of your game on rattlesnake noises or emergency percussion instruments but as they are, it would have been nice if there was more to cushion them so they couldn’t move around so much.

Of course you’re (mostly) not going to make a habit of shaking them but with the normal movement of transport they will be making a lot of noise.

Inside the little pods are an array of heads and a couple of handles to choose from to create your weapon of choice at the edible arena.

As I mentioned, there are two handles so not enough for each head which is fair enough since most of us only have two hands at a maximum anyway.

The handles are slightly curved to give a nicer grip I’m guessing, they do look cool either way!

The cutlery is really chunky and is certainly the size of usual cutlery if not a bit bigger.

The knife is something small chainsaw wielders would be proud of and the fork is so big it is more of a spork really, making me wonder if a spoon is even needed here.

The handles can also be attached to chopstick parts which as you can see, makes them some of the most rounded chopsticks on the planet.

I have to say I am not a fan of chopsticks in general in these sets because they are always way too wide at the ends to be of much use.
Unfortunately the pitfall hasn’t been avoided here which means you have to be quite the chopstick master to use them, that and they are quite uncomfortable.

If you’re a fan of puzzles this set is definitely for you because putting the handles and heads back into the pod takes a bit of working out.

Each piece goes into a certain place and no other way will satisfy the pod!

The curve of the handles and angle of the chopstick parts means that even pieces you might have thought were simple enough have to be put in a specific hole otherwise it won’t close.

There are labels if you get stuck but they are quite hard to read and really, it’s a sign that this is just way too complicated.
Thanks to the art of macro photography I managed to capture the labels in their true form.
I like how they are embossed in plastic so they aren’t going to rub off but the colour, is…well, it’s non-existent which is why they are so hard to see.

All in all I really have slated these haven’t I?

It’s not that I hate them or think they are awful, the quality is decent and the whole set is rather pretty, it’s just the design that seems to let it down.

Apart from the chopsticks which seem the same in terms of usefulness in all of these type of sets everything works well so I wouldn’t even call it a failure.

The size and fitting of the pod, the complicated setup for putting the cutlery away and the fact that the set rattles when it moves are all bad things but at the same time don’t make this unusable.

It’s not the best thing you could buy but it still works fine despite the design flaws.

If you are after a mega chunky set of cutlery on the go this set could be for you.
If you are after something space saving and simple, you should go elsewhere as these really don’t fit the bill.

As for a Rubbish Free Cutlery Mover, I guess it does do what it says on the tin, all be it with some funky percussion.
