Review: THE SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN SEASON SIX #1

Posted on the 11 March 2014 by Geekasms @geekasms

The Six Million Dollar Man.  This is one of those shows that defined my childhood.  I loved every single second of it and I was that kid that made the bionic sound with virtually every movement.  Opening up the fridge….bownanananana.  Eating cereal.  bownananananana.  I wanted to be Steve Austin.  Ah memories.

However, you didn’t come here to go down memory lane.  Dynamite has released a new comic that continues the original show into season six.  What a great way to celebrate the shows 40th anniversary.

The issue has an Alex Ross cover that I want framed and on my wall.  It’s great and captures Lee Majors perfectly.  How about the inside?  Wellllll, not so much.  The likenesses are there, in a way, but I won’t say that Ramirez nailed it.  Other than that little nitpick, I liked the look of the book.  The seventies are captured in all their glory, down to the bell bottoms.

The story puts Steve in the middle of a mission to recover a lost satellite that crashed off the shore of Florida.  He meets up with an old friend and is basically there as an observer.  Yeah, right.  Like the hero every really just sits back and observes.

The second story deals with the OSI Android division.  They have created an android (what else would the android division create?) that they are going to use to try and defund the bionics program.  Fans of the toys from the series will be squealing with delight with this little reveal and I’ll leave it at that.

I give Dynamite credit, they didn’t spend much time catching people up to speed with this book.  They assume that if you are reading it then you were a fan of the series.  Many times I had the theme song going through my head while reading this issue and every time he used his bionics they wrote out the sound effects.  I was right with them and was making the noise, out loud even, when I saw them.

The things I liked outweighed the things I didn’t and I will continue to check it out.  However, I have no idea how it will go over with anyone that didn’t grow up knowing that Steve Austin was “better than he was before….better, stronger, faster.”
