[REVIEW] Recent Lipstick Haul: Maybelline, CoverGirl

By Superbijinup @superbijinup
Hi everyone!

Trying to stay on time for my posts but I've been obsessed with LIPSTICKS! I'm kind of late on this particular bandwagon but YAYYYY, I adore these ones that I bought so far!  If you've been following me on Twitter or even my blog, you know that the lipstick that started this avalanche is the Maybelline Fall 2012 ColorSensational Lipstick in Strike a Rose!  I normally pick the most horrendous colors for my lipsticks because I haven't the slightest notion what type of color fits me the most! I still don't have a very solid idea but now I understand not to buy colors like bright baby pink or anything else equally atrocious for my skintone, lol.  Essentially, go for something that isn't too far from the natural color of your lips and branch out from there :)

Here is the pictures I posted on Twitter earlier this week for my lipstick haul:

More after the jump!

According to beauty.about.com, there is a way that you can find the best shade for you! I've excerpted this from here:

The Simple, Most Perfect Trick to Finding Your Best Shade of Lip Color

The most flattering lip tones will be one or two shades darker than your natural lip color, according to makeup artist Bobbi Brown. To test shades, apply lipstick or gloss to one lip. If that color is just a shade or two deeper than your bare lip, then you've found your shade.
Yes, it's a simple as that. So what to do if you like to buy your lipsticks at a grocery store or department store like Wal-Mart, where you can't try the lipsticks out before you buy? You can trust the color printed on the box. Simply hold it up to your lips in the store and check it out in the mirror. Or better yet, check the color out in a window, where natural light shines through.

How to Pick the Right Shade of Red

Many women wrongly believe they can't wear red lipstick. The secret to choosing the right red lip color is in the undertones. Pink-skinned girls should opt for cherry red. Those with olive skin can wear fire-engine red. Dark skin looks great with deep reds. One big red lipstick no-no: It's best not to match lips to your outfit. Don't want to go all out with red lipstick? Create a red lip stain with a little trick I got from InStyle Magazine's August 2007 issue. Makeup artist Angela Levin smooths on Dr. Hauschka lip balm, then applies red lipstick over it with her finger. The result is a gorgeous sheen of red.

Uh-Oh, You Hate the Lipstick You Just Bought

Don't throw out those lipsticks that are just a wee bit off. You can create a great lipcolor by blending lipsticks you don't like. For lipstick that's just a bit too bright, tone down the color with a darker liner before applying a lipstick.

The More Complicated Way to Choose Lip Color

While picking the right shade is as easy as going a couple shades darker than your natural lip color, we can delve just a wee bit deeper in the science of shades and skin tone. Women with fair skin, look great in lipstick shades such as nudes in a slightly apricot shade, pinks and light corals. Stay away from browns, which will appear blah.
Those with a medium skin tone can go a bit darker. You'll look great in roses, mauves and berries. Skip the bright reds and consider a deep burgundy instead.
Deep plum, chocolate or red is fabulous with dark or black skin. According to the editors of Allure's "Confessions of a Beauty Editor," women with dark skin "can go in one of two directions: toward brown or purple. Think caramel or walnut for day, and plum or wine for evening."

CoverGirl LipPerfection Lip Color

I bought three of these lipsticks from the permanent collection of CoverGirl: Kiss, Coquette, and Sweetheart.  These colors are very good for lighter skintones and I loved all of these colors!  Good thing I didn't go for any colors that were too crazy this time!

Kiss: Shimmery peachy pink color

Coquette: Pink fuschia color
Sweetheart: Pale pink color

Packaging

The overall packaging for this lipstick is pretty solid.  The lid doesn't easily fall off during transit and definitely isn't easily crushed because it's made of strong plastic/metal.  I like the accuracy of the color shown on the bottom of the lipstick.  Much better than most packaging where it's just a sticker.

Thoughts
The overall formula was pretty smooth although Sweetheart's formula didn't seem to be as smooth during application.  I liked it overall and it does have pretty good staying power.  My MAJOR gripe about this lipstick is that the DREADED WHITE RING of DEATH appeared only after a couple of hours of application.  Despite the fact that the color stayed all throughout my dinner with my friend, the white filmy ring appeared and I had to wipe it off and reapply.  Not very pleasant.  Most formulas try to prevent that from happening :\  I'm hoping that it just happened to be a fluke but we shall see.  I like the colors and I LOVE the application and staying power of this product.

Maybelline ColorSensational Lipstick
I bought these three from the ColorSensational line! Two are from the permanent line and one of them (Strike a Rose) is a limited edition from the Fall Collection 2012 (Scene on the Runway?).  I like ALL of these colors but I'm SOOOOOOOO sad that my favorite out of the bunch just happens to be a limited edition color -_________-" Just my luck.  I'm going to have to hoard this color like there's an apocalypse.  Maybe I'll find a dupe from the permanent line :)

Strike a Rose: Nude brown color

On the Mauve: Purple mauve color
Peachy Scene: Peachy coral color

Packaging
Also very solid packaging from Maybelline.  The cap doesn't easily come off and stands up pretty well to some pressure.  Despite the fact that this particular packaging isn't very accurate in terms of color gauging on the sticker, the color of the tube tells you the shade range of the color you're wearing! This is very neat and helpful for when you're trying to pick only browns, reds, or plums! Definite like!

Thoughts
I really REALLY liked this line of lipsticks from them! It's very lightweight, sheer, and didn't give me the white ring of death at the end of the day.  Unfortunately, On the Mauve is just a tad too dark for me but I can definitely sheer the formula out with a bit of chapstick.  The formula in general seems much more buttery in comparison to CoverGirl but the staying power isn't too great.  It will definitely require touchups if you want to keep the color throughout the day.  This is okay for me since this gives me more reason to look at myself in the mirror (HEHEHEHEE) but for those of you who prefer no fuss no muss, then I would suggest another lipstick. The colors are amazing and it definitely provided some moisture for my normally parched looking lips.

For both of these brands of lipsticks, there's definite tradeoffs.  I wouldn't say either of these lipsticks can be a holy grail lipstick so I'm off to find some other brand! I will definitely keep wearing these because of the adorably cute color and the price point.

You can find both of these brands at Rite Aid, CVS, Walgreens, Ulta and Target.  They're retailing at about $7.19 depending on the location.

Stay tuned for our next blogpost! Trying to get the reviews rolling on the products from Taiwan! :)

Have you tried either brand of lipstick? What did you think? Did you pick the right color for your skin tone?
