Review: “Everything Is Perfect When You’re A Liar” by Kelly Oxford

By Appraisingpages @appraisjngpages

I started following Kelly Oxford on Twitter after Andy Levy, a co-host of a late-night news show I used to watch, retweeted her.  I never regretted it.  She is one of the funniest people I’ve ever heard!  I quickly got all my friends and family to start following her too, and my lovely husband pre-ordered me her book for Valentine’s Day.  Here is the synopsis from its Goodreads page:

The funniest—and hottest—mom on Twitter plunges you headlong into her life in her hilarious memoir, Everything Is Perfect When You’re a Liar. With her trademark blend of biting wit and self-deprecation, this side-splitting book of essays will make you laugh, cry, and then laugh some more.

Sharing her life story in Everything Is Perfect When You’re A Liar, the straight-talking and riotously funny blogger Oxford opens up about her childhood, motherhood, and life with that zany, skewed perspective that make her the toast of the social media world.

I was so excited to start her book, she is hilarious.  I love that she is a mom who knows how to make fun of her kids so mercilessly, yet her love for them shines in the humor.  She communicates with her followers on Twitter and Instagram (she replied to me once! swoon!) and I think that’s such a fun element to social media.

Her essays are organized chronologically, beginning with her childhood and ending very recently.  I really enjoyed the essays about her school and early teenage years and the essays after she became her now husband and became a mother, but I didn’t care for the essays in the middle.  They detailed her wandering years through Los Angeles and remote parts of Canada and although they were interesting at times they felt like a “you had to be there story” or a story that would only be funny if you too were high or drunk too.  Not to say that they weren’t still entertaining, she is great at describing people, especially her Jesus look alike:
