PROM Drag us Across the Spectrum of Emotion with ‘Let it Out’ [Stream]

Brooklyn-based electro-pop duo PROM have done an incredible job of keeping our attention since their 2014 EP Keeping Company, despite only a few single releases since. Their unique sound has a dreamy draw that ensures you can come back to their music time and time again at different points with different moods. Their newest single, “Let it Out,” off of their debut LP Holding Pattern, embodies this directly, with the band having said in their statement to Billboard: “This song looks at the contrast between what people say and what they mean behind a screen of positivity. It explores the dichotomous nature of an argument through a cheerful beat over pensive lyrics.” While the lyrics to the song give off an air of wistfulness and a wish that things were different, the backing beat and melody provide something danceable and poppy, making it something that, regardless of the lyrics, you might put on while getting pumped up for a night out.

PROM in particular are striking in their exploration of the dichotomy of darkness and light in music, with their airy and unearthly sound consistently leaving you feeling something different, even if you’re just listening to the same song again at different points in time. Their style of music is not only able to address multiple feelings but provide an extensive wealth of opportunities to explore the complexity of human emotion. Holding Pattern is out August 23, and any New Yorkers can get their tickets to the album release show at Baby’s All Right on the same date here.
