Pirouette in the First: Who Says You Can't Go Home Again. Thomas Wolfe? Ahhh No. (Pix to Follow)

By Johntalbott

Pirouette is one of my and Colette’s go-back-to places that we, ahh, go back to when she’s in town.

The carte is ever changing, the hosts Jean-Marie and Laurent Fléchet and Thomas Chapus ever charming and Cambodian English and French-speaking chef Tommy Gousset ever eager.

The carte today was intriguing and in addition they had a special lunch of a fish ’n’ chips style cod and a bavette as well as grouse in two servings.  We went with the ardoise.

They had advertised girolles and I leapt for them but was induced into accepting today’s substitute, another type of mushrooms; our male friend, whom I will name (against my policy of anonymity to diners foolish enough to eat with me to protect the innocent) because he took the photos – Jake Dear – had the “perfect egg”; and as a complete surprise, Chef Gousset sent over two fried cod with mustard and fish ‘n’ chips-style cod to the ladies – all were acclaimed winners.

For mains, Jake and Colette had the thick slices of duck with microtomed slices of carrots with a squash puree stuffing, Madame had the maigre (or shadefish in English if that’s of any help) and I had ris de veau on the bed of chard wrapped around bits of heaven   Again all declared all winners.

For dessert we all shared an incredible rice pudding, and my few loyal readers know that I am not impressed with this dish, but I was here.

With 2 bottles of a very fine Beaujolais, 1 bottle of Chateldun, great bread and 4 coffees, our bill was 107.25 E a couple.
