Love, Chunibyo & Other Delusions - Heart Throb -

Well that’s not very nice…  That’s not very nice at all!

  • Do you know what you are getting into? Do you? Adorable high school students with overactive imaginations and impractical choices of hair styles.   Let’s get ready to go “awwww!”

But how does someone just accidentally sell a property?

  • Last Season (Possible Spoilers):  We last saw Rikka, Yuuta, Shinka, Kumin, Sanae and Kuzuha navigate the awkward and painful world of adolescence by escaping reality for fantasy.   After many misunderstandings, missed opportunities and missed connections, Rikka finds closure with her father’s death and Yuuta learns to accept Rikka’s chuunibyou side.

And I just found a new phrase to use in Japanese class!

  • Summary of Episode 1: Right before the new school year Rikka’s grandfather sold her apartment, leaving her stranded and homeless.  Yuuta comes to the rescue and offers to let Rikka stay at his place until she finds a new place of her own.   Later, the pair runs into Kumin and a barely recognizable Shinka.  Upon returning home, Shinka attempts to question Yuuta about Rikka living with him in his apartment but Rikka’s sister, Tooka, intercepts the group and confronts Rikka.   The group launches into an elaborate imaginary fight against Tooka who deflects all their imaginary attacks without any issues.  After the “fight” the group settles back in Yuuta’s apartment and discusses how Rikka came to live with Yuuta and if they are living as a couple or as housemates.  Kuzuha, upon hearing Rikka’s story of losing her home, argues in favor of letting Rikka stay with her and Yuuta as they have plenty of room to accommodate her.  Toka relents and allows Rikka to continue to stay with Yuuta for now but insists that Rikka keep looking for her own apartment and move into her own space that is just for her.
  • My Reaction: I was hesitant about this series.  But I have to say that I really did enjoy this first episode.  I am still learning about the series and the back stories to these characters but I really feel like the central theme that this series is built on -  teaching that it’s ok to be different – has never been more awkwardly fun to watch.  In some of their interactions, I kinda feel like how I felt in 8th grade.  On the outside, I was  sure I had everything figured out and yet, I was (and still am) one big huge dork on the inside.   And I’m pretty sure many of us can relate to that.   And that’s OK too.  I’m excited about watching Yuuta and Rikka’s relationship (or non relationship) grow and while I think I can already see the formula for this series, I’m still interested in what is going to happen so the characters which is an achievement in itself.

That is not what my response would have been to that.

  • Summary of Episode 2: Rikka and Yuuta are at home.  Rikka opens a package with some items she purchased online.  Yuuta comes in the room and see her new night vision goggles and wonders where Rikka got the money to pay for something so expensive.  Meanwhile, Shinka convinces Kumin and Sanae to come with her and shadow Rikka and Yuuta while they are shopping due to Shinka’s concern over Yuuta and Rikka not holding hands as of yet.  Rikka takes Yuuta to the aquarium but is unsure how he should act or how to proceed.  During their date, both Rikka and Yutta decide that their relationship can stay the way it is and they can decide what rules will work best for them.

OK, will someone please just think of poor Sanae? Please?

  • Reaction to Episode 2: I wasn’t that excited about having to deal with Shinka acting like Dr. Phil for half the episode.  I understand that this was probably done to move the story along but I was kinda hoping that maybe Rikka would choose to advance his relationship with Yuuta just based on, you know, his feelings.  Or maybe a hunch?  I know that is wishful thinking but it could happen!  I loved their date at the aquarium.  Honestly I feel like many people who watch this series don’t give Rikka enough credit.  He’s actually very emotionally intelligent and understands, in his own weird way, that sometimes it’s just better and easier for Yuuta to relate to him when he plays along with her fantasy.   To be honest, I feel like most couples who get each other that much or are willing to look at the world differently to see eye to eye with the person they are with are wonderful.  Now we’ll just have to see how adding Satone to the group will affect things.  Drama!

That’s a very odd pick-up line.

  • Here’s to the next episode and the rest of the series!  See you next time!
