With so much great music coming in this week, I've got a Saturday edition of the New Music Spotlight for you. Featuring music from the hip-hop, punk, rock, indie and R&B genres, it includes five entries and we think it's a great way to kick off your weekend.
Our artists hail from Toronto and Kingston, Ontario and Syracuse, NY and Inglewood, CA.
Let's do this!
Artist: Post Malone/Swae Lee
Hometown: Syracuse, NY / Inglewood, CA
Genre: Hip Hop

Song: Sunflower
Notes: The first single from the upcoming Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Soundtrack, Sunflower is a sweet, catchy and it's just a matter of time before it climbs the chart. The video gives us a peek at the upcoming movie, and I love what I see. The Official Soundtrack Album for Spider-Man™: Into the Spider-Verse will be released on December 14, 2018, with the film opening in theatres the same day.
Artist: The Meringues
Hometown: Kingston, ON
Genre: Indie / Punk
Related Artists: horrorpop, The Creepshow, The Vines, The Strokes
Song: Tell Me Twice
Notes: On October 12th, Kingston duo The Meringues released their first album. Made up of Ted Evans and Amanda Pants, the self-titled, initial offering is ten tracks of raw, fun, energetic, unapologetic punk, and I love it. Their interaction is intriguing, but are they a "real" couple? They're not saying. Keep an eye open for upcoming dates.
Artist: Tom Boy
Hometown: Toronto, ON
Genre: Pop / Rock
Related Artists: CAIRO, The Killers
Song: How To Become a Drug Dealer
Notes: The video for How To Become a Drug Dealer is dark and moody and beautiful to watch, with a great lyrical flow. Delivering messages of addiction, consequences and works to describe both the relationship between addict and dealer but if you listen carefully, it could just as easily be describing the deterioration of relationships.
This video hit my inbox early Friday morning and struck a chord with me. There's some brutal honesty coming through, and it's lucky for us that it's coming out in musical form. After some internal discord, Nate Daniels and Dante Berardi Jr. exited CAIRO and but were compelled to continue. They're joined by Rashad Mohammed and Andrew Wiseman.
"Except we weren't ready to quit. Joining forces with producer Crispin Day (July Talk, Shad), we wrote songs that mirrored our trainwreck past - drugs, mental illness, booze, affairs, and all."Artist: POESY
Hometown: Toronto, ON
Genre: Rock / Alternative
Related Artists:
Song: Strange Little Girl
Notes: POESY brings her instantly recognizable voice to her latest single, Strange Little Girl. The production is big, and it feels like a natural progression for the rising star. It's filled with bold lyrics and honest messaging, and I'm embracing it.
Artist: Jessie Reyez
Hometown: Toronto, ON
Genre: R&B / Soul
Related Artists: bülow
Song: Saint Nobody
Notes: Winner of the Juno music award for 2018's Breakthrough Artist, Jessie Reyez is all over our radar. With the release of her seven-song EP Being Human in Public (October 19th), the singer is poised to take it up a notch. This video is an excellent example of how sometimes simple is the best way to go. It's a little dark, it's a bit pessimistic, but it's also hopeful and Jessie's living life on her terms.
