New Delhi College Students Busted for Buying Drugs on the Dark Web

The crime branch of the New Delhi Police has arrested two students for allegedly trafficking dark web-bought drugs.

The individuals of interest have been identified as 25-year-old Sahil Kadyan and 22-year-old Ridham-both college students in New Delhi.

Authorities established that the pair operated a drugs syndicate that procured drugs online from the U.S. and other locations worldwide.

It was discovered that the darknet drugs would then be distributed by the suspects around their city.

Darknet-Sourced Drugs for New Years Celebrations

The police confirmed that they managed to recover a consignment of drugs including a total of 7 kilograms of marijuana stuffed in several cartridges, as well as 50 grams of charas (a hashish form of cannabis made in India).

Law enforcement officers went on to state that these drugs had been imported from the U.S. and targeted the festive season-the different forms of marijuana were to be sold on New Year's Eve in major Indian locations such as Delhi and Goa.

Rajiv Ranjan, a commissioner of New Delhi Police, shared that the arrest was made after Christmas in response to a lead that they received regarding the activities of the two suspects.

The police had learned that Kadyan and Ridham were scheduled to collect the package of drugs from a courier in Delhi.

The Operation

An account by Delhi Police provides details of an operation that added to the already-existing wealth of information about India's darknet drug market.

Authorities laid a trap near a FedEx office at Rama Road and pounced on the two suspected when they arrived to pick their consignment.

A search was done, which revealed five cartons of items bought from the U.S.

The officers opened the packages to reveal toy gift packs bearing drugs. In addition, officers recovered 50 grams of charas from Kadyan's pocket.

Drug Payments Made with Bitcoin

According to Commissioner Ranjan, Kadyan said that he had dealt drugs for some time, after having made links with a resident of northwest Delhi who imported marijuana from the U.S.

It is from this point that he learnt the trade of importing marijuana from abroad.

Over time, he slowly shifted towards ordering his supply via the dark web, where payments would made in advance with Bitcoin.

Soon, Kadyan made an additional contact with a resident of Berlin through the dark web.

This development allowed him to expand his scope to new markets and import from new destinations.

In the context of this case, the packages were sent from major U.S. states to India and were delivered following the requisite custom clearance procedures.

Ranjan intimated that the dark web has become a very popular tool among drug traffickers.

The platforms offer anonymity and an unlimited database of ready consumers through its integration with Tor and I2P.

He said that the nature of darknet commerce made it exceedingly difficult for the police to bring drug dealers to book due to the complications encountered in efforts to decrypt darknet communications by the layers.

The advanced level of encryption prevents websites from tracking the digital footprints of their users and in turn, the users themselves are unable to successfully harvest information about their hosts.

Darknet Drug Trade: A Rising Trend in India

The advancement of a darknet-supported drug market in India is no longer a secret.

One trend observed in India indicates that younger populations and college students are often the biggest market for darknet-sourced party drugs.

The internet has gone a long way to influence a rise in the drug business, supporting syndicates of tech-savvy criminals to sell merchandise via darknet platforms.

This aspect is a reality even with the consideration that the dark web slows the moving wheels of law enforcement as far as the drug trade is concerned.

In context of buyer profile in the Indian dark web drug market, reports indicate that both vendors and buyers appear to be well-educated people with elaborate entrepreneurial and IT skills.

A growing number of young students and professionals have been increasingly abusing psychedelic drugs in a bid to boost their energies at work.

They presume that these substances would help to revamp their performance by providing that much-needed "extra energy."

Specifically, there exists a current trend of students consuming LSD, particularly around seasonal exam periods.

Furthermore, it has been proven that workers from countries like China and Singapore have been feeding supplies to drug cartels in south Indian states.

Buyers are generally identified as recreational drug users that choose to purchase substances via the dark web-to take advantage of the safety, quality of merchandise and ease of delivery that the online underworld promises to offer.
