Mutual Benefit previews two new songs from upcoming album ‘Thunder Follows the Light’

Ahead of the release of new album ‘Thunder Follows the Light’ in September, Transgressive Records signing Mutual Benefit (multi-instrumentalist and producer Jordan Lee) has shared not one but two tasters of what we can look forward to.

‘Come to Pass’ is a gorgeous 2 minutes and 42 seconds all about the futile nature of nostalgia and how we should start looking ahead rather than back through rose-tinted glasses. Its atmospheric opening makes way for wistful and dream-laden guitars as Mutual Benefit sings: ‘I’ve been waiting for a long time, seems like we’ve waited for a lifetime. I think it’s better not to grieve’. With echoes of ‘Sea Change’-era Beck, it’s an evocative slice of Americana (complete with nature samples) with a clear warning to those who want a return to the ‘good old days: ‘I’ve got the feeling it won’t ever come around’.

The jaunty piano-led opening of ‘Shedding Skin’ subtly underlines the powerful message of how Mutual Benefit believes ‘loss is part of the fuel of growth’ and how we should always be aiming to do more good things and be better people: ‘Leave behind what you used to be’ becoming a kind-of mantra through its ambient use of electronica
