Movie Review – Avengers Confidential: Black Widow & Punisher (2014)

By Manofyesterday

Director: Kenichi Shimizu

Stars: Jennifer Carpenter, Brian Bloom, John Eric Bentley, Grant George

After interfering with a top secret mission, Nick Fury enlists the help of The Punisher to take down Leviathan.

Eesh, so I’ve been praising the virtues of the DC animated movies recently and I was hoping to do the same here but this is a turkey. Black Widow and Punisher seems an odd combination at first, and I’m not sure they worked that well in the film, but I liked their camaraderie. I was actually enjoying it for the first half but it fell apart towards the end. The big threat is an army of supposedly super soldiers infused with the DNA of the Avengers, but all they do in fight scenes is stand around. What’s the big deal?

There’s also a ridiculous romantic subplot, the resolution of which makes no sense. For a large chunk of the film it’s as though the director forgot that Punisher was in the title as well, and brought him back at the end.

It’s not good, and it’s one to avoid.
