Movie of the Day – Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li

Time for another so bad it’s good movie and I am so happy for today’s selection.  While I enjoy talking about great movies that are worthy of the time I take to talk about them, I do love to expend a little bit of energy on terribly shitty, but surprisingly entertaining movies.  Today’s is a sequel, maybe prequel, what ever the fuck it is.  All I know is that if you are basing a franchise off of a fighting game, you are going to fail spectacularly.  This movie was no exception but the greatest moments from this movie come from one actor who just beautifully articulates that shitty script and over serious acting talents.  That actor is Chris Klein.  Oh are you all in for a treat.

Movie of the Day – Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li

As the Street Fighter saga celebrates its 20th anniversary, fight fans are invited to follow along with fearsome fighter Chun-Li (Smallville’s Kristin Kreuk) as she faces off against a series of formidable opponents in this feature adaptation of the popular video-game franchise directed by Exit Wounds’ Andrzej Bartkowiak. Previously adapted for the screen in the 1994 Jean-Claude Van Damme film, the series continues to thrive as eager gamers across the globe go toe-to-toe to determine who is the most skilled and powerful warrior in the video-game universe. Michael Clarke Duncan, Chris Klein, Rick Yune, and Neal McDonough co-star in the 20th Century Fox production. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Before I jump to the Chris Klein bit, I just want to setup what makes this bad and good.

I decided to pull this particular synopsis because it doesn’t tell you a fucking thing about this movie other than it is called Street Fighter and it is based off of a video game.  That alone should tell you how little faith they had in this piece of golden crap.  I saw this movie one night when my roommates Netflixed it and wanted to drink beers and ogle at Kristin Kreuk, who is just gorgeous.  So why the hell not.  In some ways I regret it, but then again, this is another go to movie for me when people want to watch terribly bad/good movies.

Everything about this movie is laughable.  The action sequences, while choreographed to produce a certain showy realism, look ridiculous and not even remotely natural.  I mean that is really the biggest draw of this movie and when the fight scenes are just people doing a Xbox Kinetic routine, it’s bad, which also make it funny.  And the acting, or the lack their of.  I can’t lay blame on any people in particular since they all have interesting roles in other properties, but man, the lack of direction or even a script really just sucks the living acting quality out of them.  You got Neal McDonough in this who is a good actor just being hammy, Michael Clarke Duncan (RIP) being useless in this movie and I like Kristin Kreuk in Smallville.  But they look like marionettes in this movie, so it’s comical in the sense you are watching day players just phone it in, while trying to be slightly serious.

But the best part of this movie, the sole reason you should watch this is for one Chris Klein.  BEHOLD!

Let me remind you that this particular clip is just one minute of performance.  There is still a whole lot to be mined from this movie.

Excuse me while I walk through the raindrops.
