Morganite: A Gemstone That Exudes Pure Elegance

By Moin Khan @moindpfoc

Embodying the tenderness of the first pale rays of sunlight that warms the heart and lights up the soul, the morganite delights with its peach-pink hue. This gemstone, a variety of beryl, is regarded to be one of the most visually appealing gemstones available. The fine pink tone of the stone makes it popular among jewelers and women from around the world.

Though this stone was discovered in the 1900’s in California, it was several years later that it acquired its name. Previously, it was simply referred to as the ‘pink beryl’ and was not considered as a gemstone on its own right. It was in 1911 that the pink variety of beryl was provided the status of a gemstone and given the name ‘morganite,’ in honor of the American banker and mineral collector John Pierpont Morgan.

The subtle color of the morganite is the result of traces of manganese present in it. It is the stone’s color that determines its quality. Another important factor that affects the beauty of the gemstone is its cut. Only a premium-quality cut will ensure that the color of the stone stands out in its fullness. Mostly found in Brazil, Madagascar, Afghanistan and California, this gemstone has a hardness of 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs scale. The world’s largest faceted morganite, a cushion-shaped stone from Madagascar, weighs around 600 carats and is currently exhibited at the British Museum.

Known as the healing stone, the morganite is believed to promote confidence and peace. It is also considered to ease stress-related problems. The stone is said to attract the abundance of love into one’s life. It inspires joy and kindles lightness within the spirit. Morganites occur with excellent transparency, and are also durable. This makes it perfectly suitable for everyday wear, be it on rings, pendants or earrings.
