Marlon Chaplin Brings “Wanderer by Trade” to Life at The Drake Hotel

Posted on the 06 February 2017 by Hendrik Pape @soundcheckblg

Marlon Chaplin certainly captured the essence of rock n' roll in his electrifying live performance on Wednesday February 1st, 2017 at The Drake Hotel on Queen St. As soon as the Toronto native took the stage, he captivated the audience and all eyes were glued on him and his band. Chaplin's stage presence resembles that of the late Joe Strummer with a hint of Iggy Pop. Chaplin's vocals are melodically powerful and have a hint of Jack White while maintaining a vocal prowl he can call his own. The charisma that comes off of Chaplin can be felt throughout the entire room he's performing too and that's a good indication that his heart and soul is in his craft.

Toronto born musician/songwriter/producer Marlon Chaplin has just released his EP 'Wanderer By Trade', recorded live off the floor with some of Toronto's most adept musicians (members of Zeus, Lemon Bucket Orkestra and the Skydiggers) contributing. Marlon formerly shared co-writing duties in pop/rock outfit Broken Bricks, before moving onto a solo career as well as joining Freeman Dre & the Kitchen Party and Ada Dahli & the Pallbearers, producing the latter.

Marlon recently released two new singles "Annabelle + Someone" (October 07) and "Fossils" (November 07) which have both been well received and are garnering some local and international attention. They were both released digitally but will be released this Spring as the A side and B side of a 45.

Both songs were produced by Marlon Chaplin and Ewan Kay (Austra, Moon King) and engineered/mixed by the latter. They have a notably different sound from the acoustic based but more idiosyncratic EP 'Wanderer By Trade' which was released in May of 2016 and are a natural progression to the material on his next album which will be released in the fall of 2017.

Marlon Chaplin is the full artistic package in every sense. In a music scene that is struggling to find its own identity, Chaplin's music is a breath of fresh air that breathes new life into the indie rock n' roll scene in Toronto.
