Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood takes oath as Punjab Governor

Makhdoom Ahmed Mehmood on Tuesday took oath as 29th Governor of Punjab on Tuesday.

Chief Justice Lahore High Court Umar Ata Bandial administered the oath to him at a ceremony held at the Governor House.

Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif, provincial ministers, Speaker Punjab assembly and the prominent leaders of Pakistan Peoples Party Punjab (PPP) attended the ceremony.

Mehmood was elected as a member of the Punjab Assembly from PP-292, Rahim Yar Khan on the ticket of Pakistan Muslim League Functional (PML-F) but after being chosen as Punjab Governor he resigned from his party. He also served as president of PML-F Punjab chapter.

He replaced Latif Khosa, who was appointed Punjab Governor after the assassination of late-governor Salman Taseer on 11 January 2011.

According to sources, former Prime Minister Yousaf Raza Gilani, who is Mehmood’s cousin, played a pivotal role in his appointment as governor.
