A Lionsgate executive has expressed strong confidence in the company’s forthcoming film. Jim Packer, the president of worldwide television distribution at Lionsgate, made a bold declaration about their upcoming biopic of Michael Jackson, the iconic American singer-songwriter and dancer known worldwide.
Scheduled for release in April 2025, the project, titled Michael, began development in 2017 and was officially announced in 2019. However, due to delays exacerbated by the industry-wide SAG-AFTRA strike, filming didn’t commence until January of this year.
Despite these setbacks, Lionsgate now touts Michael as their most ambitious film to date. Jim Packer remarked in an investor conference:
“The buzz surrounding every released photo is quite remarkable. I believe this will be our biggest film ever.”
In addition, during a webcast at the Gabelli Media & Entertainment Symposium, Packer emphasized Lionsgate’s strategic focus on intellectual property, citing their success with franchises like The Hunger Games:
“It’s evident that we’re transitioning into an IP-focused company, spanning production, distribution, and film and TV.”
Packer drew parallels to the financial and IP significance of Lionsgate’s properties compared to Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter franchise.
Packer’s optimistic remarks stirred a range of reactions online. While many eagerly anticipate an authentic portrayal of Michael Jackson’s life, others questioned whether the film could surpass Lionsgate’s previous blockbuster franchises like Rambo, Twilight, and John Wick, suggesting that times and audiences have evolved since the 1980s.
