Do you allow your toddler to play unsupervised in their bedroom or in a playroom? I personally have always been leery of my own children playing in their bedroom, especially as a toddler, unattended for the most part. I simply wouldn’t allow them to play in their room for very long unsupervised because I didn’t want my child to accidentally hurt themselves. I usually would make them bring a few toys into the living room or wherever I was hanging out at in the house. However, as a mom I do know that it is important for them to learn how to be independent at some point. There is no perfect age for letting your child play unsupervised and I think it is totally up to the parent to determine when their child can start playing in the room unattended.
Today, I wanted to share some tips to make sure that your child is safe when it comes to playing in their bedroom or a playroom unsupervised. These tips are based upon my own experiences while raising my own children. Keeping your child safe should be your number one priority!!!
Childproof Their Bedroom or Playroom First
Before you allow your child to play unsupervised, you need to make sure that you childproof the room so that you make sure that they will have a safe place to play. Here are a few things to look for as your are childproofing your child’s room.
- All electrical outlets need plug covers.
- Anchor all dressers, book shelves, or any other furniture to the wall to prevent accidental tipping. Remember children like to climb and they might accidentally pull their furniture over.
- Remove any broken or unsafe toys.
- Check mini blinds for cords – if you have two cord blinds check with the manufacture in order to repair them or you should replace them immediately. Old mini blinds could possibly strangle your child.
- If you live on the second story or in a mobile home, make sure that your child can’t open the windows.
- Never leave the window’s open while they are playing unsupervised, they could accidentally fall out of the window. A screen alone won’t prevent your child from falling out of their window.
- Never store toys where your child can’t reach them especially their favorite toy.
- Place bed against the wall to prevent them from falling out of bed and use a bed rail on the other side.
- Always use a baby gate at the top and bottom of stairwells.
- Use childproof door knobs if the playroom leads to potentially hazardous areas like a bathroom, laundry room, closet, or on an exterior door.
- Remove any step stools from their room so that they can’t climb.

I like to constantly keep an eye on my youngest son whenever he wants to play in his room. I realize that it is difficult to get things done around the house if you are constantly supervising your child. I used to make my son follow me around the house whenever I had to leave the room. Plus, I was lucky that I have two older children who have been a huge help around the house after they get home from school. However, if you don’t have a video baby monitor or other children at home to help, then I suggest that you peek in on your child frequently if your child wants to play in their bedroom or playroom independently. Remember, it only takes a few minutes for your child to hurt themselves. Before I had the baby monitor, I would talk to him across the house and peep in his room every 10 minutes or I would make him come back in the living room with a few toys.
Talk to Your Toddler About Safety
It is important that you take the time to talk to your toddler or young child about safety. Even though they might not fully understand what you are talking about, it is still important to discuss safety with them. I found that using books often helped me talk to my children about safety issues. When talking to your toddler, always use easy words so that your toddler or young child can understand what you mean.
