Kevin Spacey Found A Really, Really Bad Time To Officially Come Out As Gay

It wouldn’t be the last couple of months of 2017 without someone famous accused of sexual assault. This one comes with  twist because the accused took this particular moment to climb awkwardly out of his glass closet. I guess that’s one way to counter being accused of jumping on top of a 14-year-old boy when you were 26.

Kevin Spacey came out of the closet on Twitter, as part of an apology to actor Anthony Rapp. In an interview with Buzzfeed, Anthony accused Kevin of trying to molest him when he was a kid at a party at Kevin’s NYC apartment in 1986. Anthony explained that he’s coming forward all of these years later because of the “witting and unwitting conspiracy of silence” that surrounded the stories about Harvey Weinstein’s supposed penchant for trying to hold auditions in the shower.

Anthony Rapp, who is now 46, was the original Marc in RENT, is currently in Star Trek: Discovery and has been acting pretty much since birth. He was appearing in a production on Broadway with Ed Harris in ’86, at the same time Kevin was also acting on the Great White Way in Long Day’s Journey Into Night. Anthony said he met Kevin at a post-show get-together and then saw him at another one where Keyser Soze invited him and a friend to Limelight. Shockingly, seeing as this sounds like a textbook case of what they call “grooming,” Kevin didn’t ply the boys with alcohol. But he did invite Anthony to a party at his apartment that he was having a few days later. Anthony, who had temporarily relocated from Joliet, Ill with his mom to be a child actor, was used to working and going around NYC by his lonesome. As he noted to Buzzfeed, “it was a different era.

Anthony went to the party and was the only kid there. Bored out of his skull because adults are drunken losers, he spent the entire evening sitting on Kevin’s bed watching TV. Anthony says that Kevin eventually showed up in the bedroom doorway and he knew something was off.

“My memory was that I thought, Oh, everybody’s gone. Well, yeah, I should probably go home,” Rapp said. Spacey, he recalled, “sort of stood in the doorway, kind of swaying. My impression when he came in the room was that he was drunk.” Rapp doesn’t remember Spacey saying anything to him. Instead, Rapp said, “He picked me up like a groom picks up the bride over the threshold. But I don’t, like, squirm away initially, because I’m like, ‘What’s going on?’ And then he lays down on top of me.”

Anthony says that Kevin was trying to “seduce me.” He got up out from under him and quickly fled the place.

He said Spacey “was, like, pressing into me,” and that he remembers Spacey “tightening his arms.” But while he can’t recall exactly how long Spacey remained on top of him, Rapp said he was able to “squirm” away after a short period.

Kind of sheds a whole new light on President Frank Underwood, right? Anthony says that he didn’t tell anyone at the time, including his mom. One reason was that the now openly gay actor didn’t want to have to discuss his sexuality with his mother. Anthony went on to other things, and Kevin went on to become a big-time celebrity. Anthony says he would become enraged whenever he’d see Kevin win an award. He eventually began telling his friends in the biz but hasn’t made a formal accusation until now. (He did finally go to a lawyer who told him he didn’t have a case.) Anthony also tweeted about why he decided to tell the story:

I came forward with my story, standing on the shoulders of the many courageous women and men who have been speaking out 1/3

— Anthony Rapp (@albinokid) October 30, 2017

to shine a light and hopefully make a difference, as they have done for me. 2/3

Everything I wanted to say about my experience is in that article, and I have no further comment about it at this time.

Well, After this story came out, and Kevin decided a way to deflect Anthony’s accusations was to come out of the closet. “I’m not a disgusting pedo, folks, I’m just gay!. And America loves its gays now!”

You can read Kevin Spacey’s entire Twitter statement below, but the gist is that he says he doesn’t remember the incident but is very, very sorry for it if he did do it.

“But if I did behave then as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior,” Spacey wrote.

And, oh, by the way, “I’m coming out after years of being pissy about people wondering if I’m gay.”

“This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are other stories out there about me and that some have been fueled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy,” he continued. He also acknowledged for the first time publicly that “I now choose to live as a gay man.”

Other stories out there about me” sounds rather ominous. This is a shitty way to come out. Most people come out cuz’ they want to be truthful, or unafraid anymore, or they want to be Miss Gay USA or Mr. Leather Bear International. Not “damn, I probably shouldn’t have tried to bodyslam a 14-year-old on my bed. Maybe coming out of the closet will solve this.” Even John Travolta is shaking his head in bewilderment right now.
