Kale? In a Base Coat? - Meet Nails Inc's New NailKale Superfood Base Coat

By Makeupguineapig @MakeUpGuineaPig
Recently a new line of polish from Nails Inc popped up at Sephora. It’s called NailKale and is infused with a rather unusual, but intriguing ingredient – Kale! J The range has colored polishes as well as the NailKale Superfood Base Coat, which is what I am going to review today.

To start with, let’s briefly discuss the condition of my nails. As you may have noticed, I am constantly switching up my nail color, and it’s rare that I don’t have a polish on them. Due to all of the various nail polishes and frequent remover berating my nails, they can get quite damaged. My biggest issue is that my nails peel. Constantly. Just when they seem to grow past the peeling point, something manages to get that top nail layer to begin the process all over again. To add to this, I’m rather lazy when it comes to caring for my nails. Always hunting for a better base coat / nail treatment, my ears perked up when I saw the Nails Inc NailKale Superfood Base Coat.

The NailKale Base Coat sounds a bit gimmicky, but then what beauty product isn’t these days? J According to Sephora’s description, it is “an antioxidant, five-benefit base coat infused with kale extract to strengthen nails.” So, kale? In a nail product? Interesting, but potentially gimmicky, no? J It also “offers keratin hardening and activation to stimulate nail growth, hydration, anti-breakage, anti-splitting protection, and deep nourishment.” Just what I need!!!
The Nails Inc website furthers the claims by adding that it has “superfood extracts of aloe vera, lemon, ginseng, pomegranate and grape to deeply nourish, smooth and brighten the nails.” It also contains “Vitamins A, C, E, F, and H for added nourishment and protection against breakage and splitting.” Whew! Given all of that, I decided to give it a go.

My thoughts? Well, I can’t say for certain, but I do feel like the NailKale works! It may not be a miracle worker, but I feel like my nails are stronger, less brittle and definitely splitting less. Areas of previous peeling seem to be kind of cemented down after painting it on, helping to prevent further peeling. Another huge plus about NailKale is that it doesn’t start flaking off the nails after a day or two like a lot of other nail strengtheners seem to do. It’s by far the best I’ve tried, plus it’s not insanely expensive for a nail treatment / base coat!
As for the feel of the NailKale? The Base Coat doesn’t feel completely slick and smooth when dry, which is fantastic for helping a nail color stick if placed on top. The subtle texture is not so noticeable that you cannot wear the Base Coat alone. It dries quickly, so if I’m following with polish, I don’t have to spend hours waiting between each step. Polish or no, as soon as it’s painted on, I feel like my nails look healthier and have a nice sheen when using this Base Coat.

I cannot say with absolute certainty that the NailKale Superfood Base Coat has been the only reason my nails have improved, but it certainly isn’t hurting! It seems to be a great strengthening treatment as well as a fantastic base coat. If you are debating giving it a go, I’d definitely recommend trying it! Plus the bottle is gorgeous, the brush is absolutely perfect (not too wide, not too skinny and very flat), and it feels really nice to hold in your hands…not that that’s terribly important, but it’s a nice addition. J Well done with the NailKale Superfood Base Coat, Nails Inc!!!
