About the Book: Across the Bridge is the continuing story of the characters introduced in Ms. Neva’s first two novels, Snow Country and Copper Country. In Across the Bridge, readers continue on the journey of Louise’s battle with ALS. We see how she touches hearts of her friends and neighbors and how her faith sustains her. In the final season of her life, Louise’s family comes to the island to help care for her.
Faith is woven into the tale in all three of Ms. Neva’s books, and each of them could serve as standalone novels. While I did not read the first two, it’s clear that they do flow well together as a trio.
Across the Bridge deals with real life stuff too – sorrow and suffering alongside personal growth. The author shares with readers the concept of hope and how it doesn’t dim the hearts of those walking daily with God despite the many challenges life throws their way. She writes about real and relatable characters, and I loved how the author didn’t steer away from difficult discussions such as suffering or where God is when folks are suffering.
Kristin Neva grew up in an old farmhouse on Copper Island in Michigan’s Keweenaw Peninsula where the hard-working, rugged residents persevere through harsh winter weather, sustained by friendship and family, surrounded by natural beauty. As an adult, she lived in the Chicago and Milwaukee areas for seventeen years before returning to the her hometown with her husband and two children.
Kristin’s first book, Heavy, co-authored with her husband, Todd, journeys through the first year after Todd’s ALS diagnosis as the Nevas struggle to find meaning, hold on to faith, and discover joy in the midst of pain.
It is this life experience that brings authenticity to Kristin’s fictional works as she explores themes of love, loss, and faith on Copper Island. Her quirky characters are endearing and wholesome. But they are also full of healthy grit, humor, flaws, and appetites.
