Jesus Rafael Soto- Chronochrome at Galerie Perrotin

SOTO-1
I remember seeing a retrospective of Jesus Rafael Soto at the Pompidou Centre in 2013 and loved his deceptively minimalist sculptures.
Galerie Perrotin has mounted a show of 60 pieces of Soto’s works simultaneously at their Paris and New York galleries, exhibiting his creations from 1953 to 2003.
Jesus Rafael Soto was born in Venezuela in 1923 training in Caracas and came to Paris in 1950. He lived in between Paris and Caracas for the rest of his life. The Neoplasticism movement of Piet Mondrian influenced him and I could recognize it by the strong colored geometric forms in his work.
The pieces on the surface have a beautiful and bold simplicity of color but as you your eye roves, you see the intricate and sometimes optical illusion effect it has. As you slowly move around the pieces, they change color and form.
The striking piece Cube de Paris is a floor to ceiling white strands wrapped in red in the middle portion. In the entrance room of the gallery is Doble Progesion Azul y Negra, a sculpture of blue and black thin rods again tricks the eye into seeing one color that turns into another.
