Inspirational art: Books and Scholars’ Accouterments (chaekgeori) – Yi Taek-gyun

Title: Books and Scholars' Accouterments (chaekgeori)

Artist: Yi Taek-gyun (1808-after 1883)

Type of art: ten-panel folding screen; ink and color on silk

Note: There is a hidden seal in the third panel from the right, which reveals the identity of the artist. Only about 12 works with a similar seal exist today.

Translated at 'books and things', chaekgeori was a style of still-life painting practiced in Korea from the late 18th century to the first half of the 20th century. It featured the techniques of trompe-l'oeil and chiaroscuro. Its first patron was King Jeongjo (1752-1800).

Yi Taek-gyun was a prominent court artist.
