Search engine optimisation (SEO) is very complex, but vital if your aim is get your school website found fast by prospective parents searching online through engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing looking for the ideal school for their child. The better optimised your website is, the more likely search engines are going to find it, like it, rank it and suggest it to people who are searching for you.

When users type your school name into a search engine, you should appear first in the listing. The more your school appears in search results for prospective parents, the more trust and confidence they begin to have in it.

So how do you create content and position your website to rank at the top of search results? Here are 7 tips that should help based on a study by Contently:

  1. High quality, rich, diverse content is going to win the day.
  2. Happy users are those who find the best possible answers to their search queries. The best answers include content that is exhaustive, well-researched, organised, and easy to consume.
  3. Take the time to research terms related to your topic to make sure they align with what consumers are searching.
  4. Create a headline that grabs readers’ attention, gets the ‘click’ and will be shared. Just as you should use keywords in the text, use well-researched search terms in headers to get the full SEO effect. As Google limits the length of a headline to the first 50 to 60 characters be as concise as possible.
  5. User experience is quickly becoming a ranking factor. Clean, organised copy with bullet points, section titles, and engaging images also make a big difference.
  6. Be mobile ready. Mobile optimisation is no longer an option, it is a must have. According to Hubspot, 60 percent of buying decisions are made online, and with 15 percent of internet traffic generated from mobile devices, it is becoming increasingly important to have a mobile marketing strategy.
  7. Understanding your audience, their preferred channels of communication and how they consume content is vital.
