How to Find the Right Treatments for Every Spot in Your Home

By Simone Design Blog @HomeSpire

Most houses have windows, they are essential for letting light into the house and warming a room at anytime of the year. Of course, a window needs to be covered at times and this is where curtains prove extremely useful. There are many different sorts of curtains, lined ones for keeping the light out, bright ones or complicated patterns usually add focus to a room and it is even possible to get some with inter-lining. This is when there is material sewed between the face fabric and the lining; this is usually only an option when obtaining custom made curtains.

Focus on texture

The more formal the space the heavy the curtain needs to be; heavy silk or velvet are popular choices as they also make great insulators. Unfortunately they also have to be dry-cleaned. If you prefer to wash your curtains at home it is better to purchase some made of silky, rayon blends or cotton. Curtains made from either wool or cotton work with almost any style of decoration.

Choosing and blending different color palettes

Your curtains can either match the rest of your room or can make a positive statement by drawing any visitor's eye. It is also important to remember that if you have unlined curtains the sun will shine through them and add a hint of color to the room.

Prints & patterns for an added tone of originality

The more patterned furniture or furnishings which you have in the house the better it is to opt for plain curtains. They will frame the rest of the room. Prints go really well with the rest of your home décor. However, you are advised to be careful. Don't go overboard and stick to maximum two different patterns in a room.

Curtain length and width

This can often be a tricky decision, wherever possible it is preferably to have them finish on the floor as this is an elegant, timeless look. It is currently popular to have your curtains slightly too long and have the last 2-3 inches on the floor. This is also useful if your floor is uneven. The ideal width for any curtain is 2 to 2½ times the width of the window. This will keep them looking good even when closed. You do not need that much material if you are simply looking to frame a window.

Mounting your new curtains

It is generally acceptable to mount the fixing brackets on the wall above and to the side of the window. This will allow your curtain fabric to flow undisturbed. If you wish to make your window look taller then you will need to hang the curtain pole approximately 6 to 8 inches above the window. If you choose to hang your curtains approximately three inches to each side of your window then you will benefit from additional light being allowed into the room and the window will look grander.

Top of the curtain

There are several options when it comes to deciding on the best top hem for a curtain.

  • Basic Heading with hooks / rings which allows the curtain to be attached to a rail
  • The pleated heading is for curtains which need drapery hooks and rings; they are generally for more formal occasions.
  • Tab top curtains are made with flat loops of fabric at the top of the curtain and can be fixed onto the pole and slid, effortlessly at any time.
The curtain rod

There are several different types of curtain rod and each one will affect the ambience of the room.

  • The classic rod is an adjustable pole with ornamental ends
  • The return rod is curved and bolts directly onto the wall
  • The Track Rod covers when you need to be able to pull your curtain effortlessly. It can be installed on the wall or ceiling
  • The tension rod extends to fit the inside of a window frame. It is not very strong and easy to bend or break as there is no hardware involved.
