How To Do Chemical Facial Bleach At Home To Lighten Facial Hair - Video Tutorial

By Ritujain
Facial hair is a common problem that people face due to various reasons like heredity, hormonal imbalance and diseases like hirsutism. Everyone has fine hair or peach fuss on the face which is normal but sometimes the hair become coarse and dark and their density also increases due to above mentioned reasons.
A common cause of excessive facial hair growth is PCOS or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome in which the normal hormonal balance of a female's body gets disrupted. There are various ways to get rid of the excessive facial hair and these are threading, waxing, laser, shaving or chemical methods. Most of these methods are painful and come with their own set of side-effects.
Bleaching on the other hand is a method which is used to lighten the facial hair thereby making those less-noticeable. It is a temporary and painless way of making the facial hair less visible and has no side effects if correct method is followed and all the precautions are taken care of.

There are salons and beauty parlors where you can get your facial hair bleached by professionals but if you can not find a suitable place which offers this service or you find it too expensive then you can always do it yourself at home.
Here I demonstrate the correct way to use facial bleach to lighten facial hair at home:
Things that you will need:
  1. A Chemical Bleach :It comes as a package which has a bleaching cream and a powder activator. Some companies like Ayur Herbals has activator in the cream form also but most of these have it in powdered form. You can use any brand like Fem, Jolen, Oxyglow, Olivia, Nature's Essence, Beauty Basket etc. I personally like Oxyglow and Olivia. It is good to use fruit bleach or herbal bleach if you are trying it for the first time because these are less harsh.
  2. A Mixing Tray and Spatula: Mostly chemical bleaches come with plastic mixing tray and spatula and you can use those. However, if you don't get these inside the packaging then use anything which is non-metallic. NEVER use metallic tray or spatula to mix the bleaching cream and powder.
  3. A Face Pack Brush: You can use your hand or the spatula also to apply the bleach on your face but a face pack brush gives an even coating and is much faster.
  4. A Sponge or Wipe Cloth: You will need this to completely remove the bleach off your face. It makes the whole process much faster. If you wash your face simply with water , without using a sponge , then it takes more time to come off.
  5. A Face Wash/ Cleanser: Use your favorite cleanser to clean the face before applying the bleach. Never apply the bleach on dirty or made-up face because it leads to breakouts.
  6. Ice cold water/Ice Cubes: Chemical bleach causes redness and burning sensation which is normal if not much. And ice cold water helps to soothe the redness and burning sensation. Use it to splash your face after removing the bleach from your face.
  7. Face Pack / Face Mask/ Aloe Vera Gel: If you see redness persisting even after using ice cold water then you can use sandalwood pack or fuller's earth pack or even aloevera gel to soothe your skin.
  8. Towel: You will need  a face towel to pat dry your face.
  9. A Headband: You will need this to put your hair away from your face so that they don't get bleached.
Steps to do chemical facial bleach at home:
  1. Wear the headband to keep your hair away from your face.
  2. Clean the face thoroughly using a mild cleanser or face wash.
  3. Mix the bleaching cream with activator thoroughly, after reading the instructions from the instruction manual that comes with the Bleach Packaging. NEVER use the chemical bleach without reading the instructions to use because different brands have given different proportions of the cream and powder to mix and you must check what the actual prescribed quantities are.
  4. Leave the mixture for 5-10 minutes so that all the powder particles dissolve in the cream. The mixture becomes a little frothy and slightly increases in size when it is ready to be used.
  5. Using a face pack brush, apply an even layer of this bleaching mixture on your face and neck. It is always good to start from the places where people generally have more hair, like sides of the face and upper lip. This way you can let the bleaching mixture sit there for slightly longer duration which gives better results.
  6. NEVER apply bleaching cream near your eyes and on your eyebrows. It makes the eyes burn and makes them really watery. If you accidentally get this mixture into your eyes then wash your eyes with plenty of cold water and see a doctor if it does not help
  7. Let the mixture sit on your face for 5-7 minutes. Now, this varies from person to person. It depends on your skin-tone. Instructions about the duration for which you need to keep the mixture on are always given in the same instruction manual so you MUST check that out. Usually this time ranges from 5-7 minutes for dark skin-tone, 8-10 minutes for medium and 10-15 for lighter skin-tone. In no case you should keep this mixture on for more than 20 minutes.
  8. Take a clean spatula and scrape off some mixture from your face and check if your facial hair have turned light. If yes, then start removing the bleach from your face; if no, then wait for 1-2 minutes and check again.
  9. Once you have checked that your hair have become lighter, scrape off the excess bleach with the spatula and use a wet sponge to clean your face.
  10. Wash your face with cold water and pat it dry using a clean towel.
  11. Apply a cooling face pack or aloe vera gel to soothe your skin.

Precautions:
  1. Always check the expiry date on the bleach when you buy it.
  2. Always do a patch test to check if you have any allergy with this product.
  3. Never use metallic mixing tray or spoon to mix the bleaching cream and powder.
  4. Avoid contact with eyes and eyebrows.
  5. Never use the bleach on cuts or open skin or pimples.
  6. Don't use the bleach if you have sensitive skin.
  7. Never use hot/warm water to wash your face for at least 48 hours after using the bleach.
  8. Never use any chemicals or soap on your face for at least 48 hours after bleaching your facial hair.
  9. Don't use the bleach more than once every two weeks. That means not more than twice a month with a gap of at least 15 days between applications.
  10. Never let the bleach sit on your face for more than 20 minutes in any case.
  11. Never use the bleach without reading the instruction manual.
  12. Remove any metallic jewelry like earrings or necklaces before applying bleach.
