How Dolomiti Change Colour and the History, Perchè Le Dolomiti Cambiano Colore e La Loro Storia in Breve.

How Dolomiti change colour and the history, perchè le dolomiti cambiano colore e la loro storia in breve.

Dolomiti at the sunset!

As I have promised you, I go on with the posts about the Dolomiti. So let me write something more about that. Do you know the painters called " Impressionists"? T

Dolomiti during the day.

hey painted the same subject more times to catch the different colours given by the light during the day. Now, the Dolomiti could have been a perfect subject for these painters. The phenomenon  describing the color changes of Dolomiti during the day is called "Enrosadira" . Indeed their summits have warm and deep colours during the sunset while they have cold colours when lighted up by the moon.
The Dolomiti have a long and interesting geological history. We have to go back  about 280 millions of years. By that time there was a huge volcanic activity in the Dolomiti area and this created a lot of sediments. Then all the area was submerged by the ocean and it had stayed there for milions of years. An archipelago emerged about 240 millions years ago.
A lot of microorganisms  fixed mineral salts on the stones of these islands . This is the reason why now there are so many fossil evidences. There was one more volcanic phase   that finished 236 millions years ago. Then microorganisms continued in building a reef. After the collision between Africa and Europe - at the end of the age called "Cretacico" - the Dolomiti arose becoming the actual mountain chain. From here an then the Dolomiti will tell us their history on the last milions of years.
