Have You Heard the Biggest Girl Band of 2014?

Haim

I have to admit I’m a bit late to the Haim (pronounced “high-im”) party. But I’ve arrived now with champagne in both hands!! Haim is sooo my band of 2014. I first heard of Haim when they won the BBC Sound of 2013. I thought they were cool, in the indie rocker kind of way. They had the guitars and the hair to match, and a laid back vibe about their sound.

The three sisters from California have quickly become the biggest girl-band the business has seen in ages. I cannot remember anyone since The Go-Gos and The Bangles making so many rock chic waves. Since topping the poll in Sound of 2013 they’ve signed with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation, toured with Vampire Weekend and Mumford & Sons, and generally created so much even the fashion world is knocking on their door. (Haim have performed and done DJ gigs for Chloe and TopShop amongst others). I bet my bottom dollar there’s an endorsement deal in the horizon with a major fashion label.

Haim interview

“If I read Check out this band; they sound like both Fleetwood Mac and Beyoncé,’I'd be like, What?!” says Danielle Haim “I get squeamish when people say that. Fleetwood Mac is one of the greatest bands out there! Let’s start a little smaller, you know?”

So, I kind of dismissed Haim… and then I completely fell in love with “If I Could Change Your Mind”. That made me take a proper listen to their debut – a sun-kissed California album “Days Are Gone“. I fell in love with the airy melodies and the enough-grit and ‘tude to make it sound like a long-lost 1980s Top 40 hit. They mostly get compared to one of my all time favorite bands Fleetwood Mac and  The Rolling Stone Magazine chose Days Are Gone as one of 50 Best Albums of 2013. I am not surprised. The only thing I am surprised about is why it took me so long to join the party!
