GreenR Store and Cafe, Shahpur Jaat, Delhi: A Healthy Vegan Option

By Indian Food Freak @IFoodFreak

GreenR Cafe 1Though it requires a bit of trudging through the labyrinthine lanes of Shahpur Jaat, the quaint little cafe called GreenR (Pronounced ‘Greener’) has a small yet interesting menu to offer to the avid foodies. Since Shahpur Jaat is a multi-brand destination and the entry is through a shop, watch out for the signages and your head as you climb up the low level stair case. The menu does not have the usual dishes in the menu like burger, dal-roti, etc. and it will appeal more to the well traveled Indians or the tourist population that throng the area known for its fashion designers and bridal accessories.

Claiming to be the first modern Californian vegetarian kitchen in India, GreenR has some interesting mock meats options which are thankfully much more than soya or jackfruit. Not only that, GreenR also has a few options that cater to Vegan and Gluten-free diet.

I start with bottled cold press juice. I like that the restaurant is selling it at the MRP printed on the bottle and did not charge any further premium on the listed price. Priced moderately at Rs. 150, Cassava Root Fries are any day better than the normal french fries available in the market. These are paired beautifully with the mango habenaro sauce.

Next I try the Jackfruit Carnitas Arepas. Arepas are kind of burger buns but made with maize. The arepas are well made and I enjoy these. The mock chicken is made with seitan which is the wheat gluten. I have tried seitan in a Rajasthani dish called chakki ki sabji and it’s yum. I find the pizza to be competent but there are hardly 3 pieces of seitan in the pizza and hence, in one of the slices, I do not get even a single piece of it. The pizza is priced at just Rs. 250 and I wish they increase the price  a bit and give more of ingredients on the pizza.

I love the Veg Tagliatelle which is made with grated zucchini. However, my friend wanted a normal tagliatelle made with flour. I found mine to be more healthy, equally tasting and very innovative. I understand that this dish is only for those who would love to experiment.

I ended the meal with a delightful dessert, which is a vegan and gluten free raw cheese cake (no cream) loaded with peanut butter, maple syrup dates and cashew crust. The portion is sufficient for two.
